The final intensifying phrase telikoutos seismos houto megas {τηλικοῦτος σεισμὸς οὕτω μέγας | tēlikoûtos seismós hoútō mégas} repeats seismós and megas and adds telikoûtos and hoútō for emphatic degree: “so great an earthquake, so great.” In English, the paratactic piling of kai is preserved for rhetorical force, while the comparative and intensifying clauses are rendered with relative and temporal constructions that clearly present this earthquake as unique in all human history.
