Revelation 16:21ExegesisTAB

Revelation 16 : 21 Judgment | Calamity | Blasphemy
21. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the subject–modifier sequence chalaza megalē {χάλαζα μεγάλη | chá-la-za me-gá-lē} “great hail,” followed by the comparative phrase hōs talantiaia {ὡς ταλαντιαία | hōs ta-lan-ti-aí-a} “like a talent in weight,” which specifies the extraordinary size of the hail. The present tense verb katabainei {καταβαίνει | ka-ta-bai-nei} “falls down” functions as a historical present, vividly portraying the ongoing descent of the hail from heaven in the prepositional phrase ek tou ouranou {ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ | ek toû ou-ra-noû}. The prepositional phrase epi tous anthrōpous {ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους | e-pì toús anthrṓ-pous} identifies the human recipients of this judgment. A second clause introduced by kai {καὶ | kaí} shifts to the human response: the aorist eblasphēmesan {ἐβλασφήμησαν | eb-las-phē-mē-san} “they blasphemed” presents their reaction as a completed, culpable act. The subject hoi anthrōpoi {οἱ ἄνθρωποι | hoí án-thrō-poi} is repeated, creating a rhetorical emphasis on “the people” both as those struck and as those who rebel verbally. The direct object ton theon {τὸν θεὸν | tón the-ón} marks God as the target of their blasphemy. The causal prepositional phrase ek tēs plēgēs tēs chalazēs {ἐκ τῆς πληγῆς τῆς χαλάζης | ek tēs plē-gēs tēs cha-lá-zēs} specifies that the plague, conceived as a blow delivered by the hail, is the reason for their cursing. The explanatory clause introduced by hoti {ὅτι | hó-ti} “because” then clarifies the rationale: megalē estin hē plēgē autēs sphodra {μεγάλη ἐστὶν ἡ πληγὴ αὐτῆς σφόδρα | me-gá-lē es-tín hē plē-gē au-tēs sphó-dra} “its plague is great exceedingly.” Here megalē and sphodra combine to heighten the intensity, while autēs refers back to the hail, personifying its effect. In translation, the historical present katabainei is rendered with a present in the formal version to preserve vividness, while a simple past is used dynamically for narrative flow. The causal relationships expressed by ek and hoti are preserved with “because of” and “since,” maintaining the logical sequence from divine judgment to human blasphemy.
