Zechariah 13 : 4 Shame | Prophecy | Deception
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The opening vehayah {וְהָיָ֣ה | wə-hā-yâ} ‘and it shall be’ introduces a prophetic declaration. The temporal phrase bayyom hahu {בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא | ba-yôm hahû} ‘on that day’ situates the occurrence in a specific future time. The expression hanneviim ish {הַנְּבִיאִ֛ים אִ֥ישׁ | hannəvîʼîm îš} ‘the prophets each man’ emphasizes both collective and individual prophecy. Yevoshu {יֵבֹ֧שׁוּ | yēvošû} ‘they will be ashamed’ expresses the forthcoming shame linked to mechezyono {מֵחֶזְיֹנ֖וֹ | mēḥezyōnô} ‘from his vision’, while behinnaveoto {בְּהִנָּֽבְאֹת֑וֹ | bəhin-nāvēʼōtô} ‘in his prophesying’ specifies the prophetic act. The negative velo yilbeshu {וְלֹ֧א יִלְבְּשׁ֛וּ | wə-lō yilbəšû} ‘and not they will wear’ marks the prohibition of adderet sear {אַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָ֖ר | adderet se·ʿar} ‘cloak of hair’, with lemaan kachesh {לְמַ֥עַן כַּחֵֽשׁ | le·maʿan ka·ḥēš} ‘in order to deception’ denoting the illicit motive.
