1 Chronicles 16 : 18 Promise | Land | Inheritance
18. Linguistic Exegesis
The infinitive construct le’emor {לֵאמֹר | lēʾemor} ‘to say’ introduces an indirect divine utterance. Lekha {לְךָ | ləḵā} ‘to you’ marks the addressee in a prepositional phrase. The imperfect verb etten {אֶתֵּן | ʾetṯên} ‘I will give’ expresses a future promise. The construct chain eretz-kenaan {אֶרֶץ־כְּנָעַן | ʾereṣ-kenāʿan} ‘land of Canaan’ specifies the territory. Chevel {חֶבֶל | ḥevel} ‘portion’ and naḥalatch’em {נַחֲלַתְכֶם | naḥălaṯkem} ‘your inheritance’ form a genitive construct indicating the allotted share. English shifts the Hebrew verb-initial order into subject-verb-object to foreground the divine promise with clarity.
