1 Chronicles 17:5ExegesisTAB

1 Chronicles 17 : 5 Dwelling | Movement | Presence
5. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with ki {כִּי | kî} ‘for’, marking a justificatory clause. The negative particle lo {לֹא | lō} ‘not’ negates the Qal perfect verb yashavti {יָשַׁבְתִּי | yāšavtî} ‘I have dwelt’, establishing an ongoing condition. The prepositional phrase be-vayit {בְּבַיִת | bə-vayit} ‘in a house’ contrasts spatially with the later locative chain. The temporal expression min-ha-yom {מִן־הַיּוֹם | min-hay-yôm} ‘from the day’ sets the starting point. The relative clause introduced by asher {אֲשֶׁר | ʾăšer} ‘that’ modifies yom, with the Hifil perfect he‘elêti {הֶעֱלֵיתִי | he‘ēlêṯî} ‘I brought up’ taking et-yisra’el {אֵת־יִשְׂרָאֵל | ʾeṯ-yisrāʾēl} as its direct object. The next temporal marker ad {עַד | ʿaḏ} ‘until’ with ha-yom haz-zeh {הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה | hay-yôm hazzēh} ‘this day’ establishes duration to the present. The vav-consecutive imperfect wāʼehî {וָאֶהְיֶה | wāʼehî} ‘and I have been’ shifts to a durative imperfect state. The locative chain me’ohel {מֵאֹהֶל | mēʼōhel} ‘from tent’ + el-ohel {אֶל־אֹהֶל | ʾel-ʼōhel} ‘to tent’ + ûmimmishqān {וּמִמִּשְׁכָּן | ûmimmishqān} ‘and from tabernacle’ emphasizes continuous movement and the temporary nature of God’s habitation among Israel.
