1 And it came to pass, when David was dwelling in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Presence} remains under curtains {yeriot: woven tent coverings}.”
2 And Nathan said to David, “Do all that is in your heart {bilvavekha: inner resolve}, for God {Elohim, Faithful Companion} is with you.”
3 And it happened that night that the word {devar: divine communication} of God {Elohim, Divine Authority} came to Nathan saying,
4 Go and say to David my servant, “Thus says the LORD {YHWH, Divine Messenger}: You will not be the one to build the house for Me to dwell {lashevet: to reside continually} in.”
5 For I {YHWH, Faithful Guide} have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up Israel {yisra'el: covenant nation} until this day, but I have been from tent to tent and from one tabernacle to another.
6 Wherever I {YHWH, Present Guide} have walked throughout all Israel, did I speak a word to any one of the judges {shoptei: appointed overseers} of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, “Why have you not built for Me a house of cedars?”
7 And now thus you shall say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts {YHWH Tsevaot, Divine Commander}: I took you from the pasture {naveh: open grazing land}, from following the flock, to be ruler over My people Israel.’
8 And I {YHWH, Ever-Present One} have been with you in all that you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name {shem: lasting renown} like the name of the great ones who are in the land.
9 And I {YHWH, Promise Giver} will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant {nataʿ: establish securely} them, and they will dwell in their place and will not be disturbed again, and sons of wickedness will not continue to afflict them as at the beginning.
10 And from the days that I commanded judges {shofetim: judicial leaders} over My people Israel, and I subdued all your enemies, and I declared to you that the LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller} will build a house for you.
11 And it will be when your days are fulfilled to go with your fathers, that I {YHWH: Promise Keeper} will raise up your offspring {zar'a: descendant future generation} after you, who will be of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom.
12 He will build a house {bayit: temple structure} for Me {YHWH, Promise Giver}, and I will establish his throne forever.
13 I {YHWH, Covenant Preserver} will be to him as a father, and he will be to me as a son. And my steadfast love {chasdi: steadfast covenantal favor} I will not remove from him, just as I removed it from him who was before you.
14 And I {YHWH, Promise-Keeper} will cause him to stand in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established {nakhon: securely fixed} forever.
15 According to all these words and according to all this vision, Nathan {Natan: prophetic envoy} spoke to David {David: anointed king}.
16 Then King David came and sat before the LORD {YHWH, Covenant King}, and he said, “Who am I, LORD God, and what is my house {beiti: ancestral heritage}, that You have brought me this far?”
17 And this was a small thing in Your eyes, God {elohim: Divine Speaker}, and You spoke concerning the house {beit: familial line} of Your servant for the distant future, and You have regarded me as one of high rank among men, LORD God {YHWH elohim: Destiny Exalter}.
18 What more can David say to You {YHWH, Omniscient One} for honoring {kavod: weighty honor} Your servant? For You know Your servant.
19 LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller}, for the sake of Your servant and according to Your heart, You have accomplished all this greatness {gedulah: extraordinary deed} to make known all these great things.
20 LORD {YHWH, Unmatched Protector}, there is none like You; there is no God {elohim: Supreme Sovereign} besides You in all that we have heard with our ears.
21 And who is like Your people Israel, one nation on earth, for whom God {ha'elohim, Covenant Redeemer} went to redeem for Himself a people, and to make for You a name through great and awesome deeds {gedulot: mighty works}, driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed from Egypt, from among the nations?
22 And You gave Israel, Your people, to Yourself as an enduring people, and You, LORD {YHWH, Everlasting Covenant-Maker}, have become their God {elohim: Sovereign Ruler}.
23 And now, LORD {YHWH, Covenant Fulfiller}, let the word {davar: spoken commitment} that You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do just as You have spoken.
24 And let it be established, and may Your name become great forever, saying, “The LORD of hosts {YHWH Tseva’ot, Divine Commander} is the God of Israel, a God to Israel.” And the house of David your servant {avdekha: Covenant Servant} will be established before You.
25 For You, my God {Elohai, Promise Confirming God}, have revealed the ear {ozen: receptive heart} of Your servant that You will build a house for him. Therefore, Your servant has found it in himself to pray before You.
26 And now, Lord God {YHWH Elohim, Promise Keeper}, You are the God, and You have spoken this good thing {tovah: beneficial promise} concerning Your servant.
27 And now You have been pleased {hoalta: chosen by favor} to bless the house of Your servant so that it may remain forever before You. For You, LORD {YHWH, Promise Fulfiller}, have blessed it and it is blessed forever.
