1 Chronicles 19 : 16 Defeat | Reinforcements | Command
16. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse advances the battle narrative with a wayyiqtol opening, vayyar {וַיַּרְא | wayyarʾ} ‘and (he) saw,’ where the singular verb agrees with the collective subject Aram {אֲרָם | ʾărām} ‘Aram/Arameans.’ The clause introduced by ki {כִּי | kî} supplies the perceived reality: niggefu {נִגְּפוּ | niggəpû} ‘they were struck down,’ a passive that presents Aram as the recipient of defeat, reinforced by the spatial idiom lifnei {לִפְנֵי | lipnê} ‘before/in the presence of’ Israel, commonly used for being overmatched in confrontation. A rapid sequence of coordinated wayyiqtol clauses (vayishlechu … vayotziu {וַיִּשְׁלְחוּ … וַיּוֹצִיאוּ | wayyišləḥû … wayyôṣîʾû}) depicts immediate response: diplomatic or logistical initiation (sending malachim {מַלְאָכִים | malʾākîm} ‘messengers’) followed by mobilization (bringing out reinforcements). The relative clause asher meever hannahar {אֲשֶׁר מֵעֵבֶר הַנָּהָר | ʾăšer mēʿēḇer hannāhār} specifies the source of these forces as coming from “beyond the river,” extending the scene beyond local troops. The final appositional phrase veshofakh sar-tseva Hadadezer {וְשׁוֹפַךְ שַׂר־צְבָא הֲדַדְעֶזֶר | wəšôpaḵ śar-ṣəḇāʾ hădadʿezer}, followed by lifneihem {לִפְנֵיהֶם | lipnêhem} ‘before them,’ places named leadership at the front, portraying ordered re-engagement after an initial setback.
