1 And the sons of Israel, by their number—the heads {rō-šê hāʾāwōṯ: tribal heads} of the fathers, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers—served the king in all matters of the divisions that came in and went out month by month for all the months of the year; each division {ham-máḥă-lō-qêṯ: single administrative division} was twenty-four thousand.
2 Over the first {rishonah: initial rotation} division for the first month was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel, and over his division were 24,000 {elef: military contingent} men.
3 From the descendants {bnei: lineage group} of Perez {peretz: breakthrough leader}, the chief over all the officers of the armies for the first month.
4 And over the division {machaloket: organized unit} of the second month was Dodai the Ahohite, and his division; and Mikloth served as leader under him; and in that division were 24,000 {elef: military units} men.
5 The commander of the army for the third month was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest and chief; over his division {machaluketo: military cohort} were 24,000 {aleph: 1,000-unit}.
6 This was Benaiah {benayahu: chief officer}, a mighty warrior of the Thirty {ha-sheloshim: elite corps} and over the Thirty, and in his division was Ammizabad, his son.
7 The fourth, for the fourth month {khodesh: designated period}, was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; and over his division were 24,000 {alef: group of a thousand}.
8 The fifth for the fifth month {chodesh: scheduled rotation} was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite, and over his division were 24,000 {alef: thousand-unit grouping} men.
9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; and over his division {makhaluqto: military unit} were 24,000 {elef: thousand troop unit}.
10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite {hapeloni: Ephraim clan member} of the sons of Ephraim; and over his division {machalukto: organized troop unit} were 24,000 men.
11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbekai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites {lazarkhî: clan of Zerah}; and over his division were 24,000 men {elef: military unit}.
12 The ninth {hatshi'i: ordinal appointment} for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite of the Benjaminites, and over his division {machalukto: military cohort} were twenty-four thousand men.
13 The tenth {ha'asiri: sequential appointment} for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite of the Zerahite line, and over his division {machalukto: military unit} were 24,000 men.
14 The eleventh {ashtei asar: ordinal designation}, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah the Pirathonite of the sons of Ephraim; and over his division were 24,000 {alef: military unit} men.
15 The twelfth {hashneim asar: ordinal rank}, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel, and over his division were 24,000 {elef: military cohort} men.
16 And over the tribes {shivtei: clan units} of Israel, for the Reubenites, Eliezer son of Zikri was leader {nagid: appointed chief}; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah son of Maakah.
17 Over the tribe of Levi, Hashavyah {Hashavyah: Yah has considered} son of Kemuel held authority; over Aaron, Tsadok {Tsadok: righteous one} fulfilled the priestly leadership.
18 Over Judah, Elihu from the brothers {achey: kin group} of David; over Issachar, Omri the son {ben: lineal descendant} of Michael.
19 Over Zebulun {zevulun: tribal jurisdiction} was Ishmaiah son of Obadiah {ben: Hebrew term for “son” denoting lineage}, and over Naphtali was Jerimoth son of Azriel.
20 Over the sons of Ephraim {Efrayim: tribal region descended from Joseph’s line}, Hoshea son of Azazyahu; over half {chatzi: one of two portions} the tribe of Manasseh, Joel son of Pedaiah.
21 For half {ḥaṣî: partial allotment} of Manasseh in Gilead {gil‘adâh: region east of the Jordan}, Iddo son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner.
22 Over Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham; these were the leaders {sarei: chief rulers} of the tribes {shibtei: family divisions} of Israel.
23 And David did not take a census of those twenty years old and under, because the LORD {YHWH, Increase Promiser} had said to multiply Israel like the stars {kokhvei: celestial bodies} of the heavens.
24 Joab, son of Zeruiah, began to number {limnot: Take a Census}, but did not finish; and in this there was wrath upon Israel, and the number was not recorded in the account of the annals for King David {Dawid: Beloved Leader}.
25 And over the king’s storehouses {otzrot: royal supply depositories} was Azmaveth son of Adi’el; and over the storehouses in the field {sadeh: agricultural region}, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers was Jonathan son of Uzziah.
26 And over those who did the work of the field {sadeh: cultivated plot} for the service of the ground was Ezri son of Kelub {Ezri: helper}.
27 And over the vineyards {keramim: tended grape plots} was Shimei the Ramathite; and over the storehouses {otzrot: storage chambers} of the wine in the vineyards was Zabdi the Shiphmite.
28 Baal-Hanan the Gederite was over the olive trees and the sycamore-fig trees {shikmim: cultivated shade trees} in the lowland {shephelah: foothill region}, and Joash was over the storehouses of oil.
29 And over the cattle that were pastured in Sharon {ha-sharon: fertile plain region}, Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge; and over the cattle in the valleys {ba-amakim: low-lying tracts}, Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge.
30 Over the camels was Ovil the Ishmaelite {yishme’eli: descendant of Ishmael} and over the female donkeys was Yechdeyahu the Meronothite {meronothi: inhabitant of Meronoth}.
31 And over the flocks was Yaziz the Hagrite. All these were officials {sarei: administrative stewards} of the possessions that belonged to King David {David: Royal Founder}.
32 And Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor {yoets: court counselor}, a man of understanding {mevin: keen discernment}, and a scribe; he, together with Jehiel son of Hakmoni, was with the king’s sons.
33 And Ahithophel was counselor {yo’etz: official advisor} to the king, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s companion {re’a: trusted confidant}.
34 And after Ahithophel {achitophel: Brother of Folly} came Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar; and Joab was the commander {sar: Military Leader} of the king’s army.
