1 Samuel 17 : 45 Confrontation | Authority | Defiance
45. Linguistic Exegesis
The introductory vav-consecutive wayyōmer {וַיֹּ֤אמֶר | wayyōmer} marks the shift into David’s direct speech. The subject dāwîḏ {דָּוִד֙ | dāwîḏ} is followed by ʾel-happ̄ĕliššāṯî {אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י | ʾel-happ̄ĕliššāṯî} “to the Philistine.” A triad of instruments—bə-ḥerev {בְּחֶ֖רֶב | bə-ḥerev}, ū-ḇa-ḥănîṯ {וּבַחֲנִית | ū-ḇa-ḥănîṯ}, ū-ḇə-ḵîḏōn {וּבְכִיד֑וֹן | ū-ḇə-ḵîḏōn}—emphasizes his weapons. The emphatic conjunction wə-ʾānōḵî {וְאָנֹכִ֣י | wə-ʾānōḵî} “but I” and the parallel participle bāʾ-ʾēlêkā {בָֽא־אֵלֶ֗יךָ | bāʾ-ʾēlêkā} “I come to you” set up a rhetorical contrast. The construct chain in bə-šēm {בְּשֵׁם | bə-šēm} “in the name” links to the divine titles Yəhôwāh ṣə-ḇāʾōt {יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת | Yəhôwāh ṣə-ḇāʾōt} and ʾĕlōhê maʿārḵōt yiśrāʾēl {אֱלֹהֵי מַעַרְכ֥וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל | ʾĕlōhê maʿārḵōt yiśrāʾēl}, grounding David’s confidence in divine authority. The relative clause ʾăšer ḥērāp̄tā {אֲשֶׁר חֵרַפְתָּ | ʾăšer ḥērāp̄tā} “whom you have defied” assigns moral culpability to the Philistine.
