9. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative uses a series of vav-consecutive verbs—vayevakesh {וַיְבַקֵּשׁ֩ | wă-yĕ-ḇaq-qēš} ‘and he sought,’ vayilkeduhu {וַֽיִּלְכְּדֻ֜הוּ | wă-yil-ke-dū-hū} ‘and they captured him,’ vayiveihu {וַיְבִאֻ֣הוּ | wă-yə-bî-ʾū-hū} ‘and they brought him,’ vayemituhu {וַיְמִתֻהוּ֒ | wă-yə-mi-tū-hū} ‘and they put him to death,’ and vayikberuhu {וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֔הוּ | wă-yik-bə-rū-hū} ‘and they buried him’—to create rapid progression. The Hitpael participle mitchabeh {מִתְחַבֵּ֣א | mit-ḥa-bêʾ} ‘hiding’ sets the scene in Shomron {בְשֹֽׁמְרוֹן | bə-šom-rôn} ‘Samaria.’ A relative clause introduced by asher-darash {אֲשֶׁר־דָּרַשׁ | ʾă-šer-dā-raš} ‘who sought’ qualifies the descendant, and the conjunction ki introduces quoted speech explaining motive. Finally, the negative existential ve-ein {וְאֵין֙ | wə-ʾēn} ‘and there was not’ with the construct le-beit Ahazyahu expresses the absence of anyone able to sustain royal power.
