Acts 13:25ExegesisTAB

Acts 13 : 25 Identity | Humility | Anticipation
25. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the temporal clause hos de eplerou {ὡς δὲ ἐπλήρου | hōs dè eplḗ-rou} “as he was completing,” where hos introduces a time frame and the imperfect eplerou presents John’s ministry as a process approaching its end. The subject Ioannes {Ἰωάννης | Iō-án-nēs} is followed by the object phrase ton dromon {τὸν δρόμον | tón dró-mon}, using the metaphor of a “course” or “race” for his assigned ministry path. The main narrative verb elegen {ἔλεγεν | é-le-gen} is also imperfect, portraying what John habitually or repeatedly said during this closing phase of his work. The direct speech begins with the interrogative ti {Τί | Tí} introducing the object clause eme huponoeite einai {ἐμὲ ὑπονοεῖτε εἶναι | e-mé hu-po-no-eî-te eî-nai}, literally “me do you suppose to be,” in which eme is fronted for emphasis and the infinitive einai depends on huponoeite. This construction highlights the issue of John’s identity. The following assertion ouk eimi ego {οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγώ | ouk eimí e-gṓ} uses explicit first person ego for emphasis, “I myself am not,” sharpening his denial of being the expected figure. The adversative all idou {ἀλλʼ ἰδοὺ | all i-doú} shifts from denial to announcement, drawing attention to the succeeding clause erchetai met eme {ἔρχεται μετʼ ἐμὲ | ér-khe-tai met e-mé}, “there is One coming after me,” where the present erchetai functions as a futuristic present stressing the certainty of the coming One. The relative clause hou ouk eimi axios {οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἄξιος | hoû ouk eimí á-xi-os} modifies this unnamed person and expresses John’s unworthiness in relation to Him. The infinitive phrase to hupodema ton podon lusai {τὸ ὑπόδημα τῶν ποδῶν λῦσαι | tó hu-pó-dē-ma tôn po-dôn lŷ-sai} functions as the object of axios, specifying the humble task—loosening a sandal {ὑπόδημα | hu-pó-dē-ma} from the feet {ποδῶν | po-dôn}—that John considers himself unworthy even to perform. In translation, word order is adjusted to maintain clear English clause structure while preserving the contrast between John’s denial of mistaken identity and his deep humility before the One who follows him.
