Amos 8:5:1לֵאמֹ֗רlemorsaying
Amos 8:5:2מָתַ֞יmataiwhen Amos 8:5:3יַעֲבֹ֤רyaavorwill pass Amos 8:5:4הַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙hakhodeshthe new moon or the month Amos 8:5:5וְנַשְׁבִּ֣ירָהvenashbiraso that we may sell Amos 8:5:6שֶּׁ֔בֶרshevergrain Amos 8:5:7וְהַשַּׁבָּ֖תvehashabatand the Sabbath Amos 8:5:8וְנִפְתְּחָה־בָּ֑רveniftekhavabarso that we may open up grain Amos 8:5:9לְהַקְטִ֤יןlehaktinto make small Amos 8:5:10אֵיפָה֙efaan ephah Amos 8:5:11וּלְהַגְדִּ֣ילulehagdiland to make great Amos 8:5:12שֶׁ֔קֶלshekela shekel Amos 8:5:13וּלְעַוֵּ֖תuleavetand to distort Amos 8:5:14מֹאזְנֵ֥יmozenescales of Amos 8:5:15מִרְמָֽה׃mirmadeceit
5. Formal Translation
Saying, “When will the new moon pass so that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath, so that we may open grain for sale—to make the ephah small and the shekel great, and to pervert the balances of deceit?”
5. Dynamic Translation
They say, “When will the new month end so we can sell grain, and when will the Sabbath be over so we can start trading again—shrinking the ephah and inflating the shekel, cheating with dishonest scales?”
