1 This is what the Lord GOD {YHWH Adonai, Sovereign Revealer} showed me: and behold, a basket {keluv: harvest basket} of summer fruit.
2 And He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD {YHWH, No-Longer Sparing} said to me, “The end {haqqets: judgment deadline} has reached My people Israel; I will not pass over them again.”
3 On that day the temple songs will be wailing, declares the Lord GOD {YHWH Adonai, Sovereign Judge}. Many corpses will be in every place—flung out. Silence! {has: hush command}
4 Hear this, you who trample {shoapim: press upon} the needy and seek to destroy {lashbit: bring to an end} the poor of the land.
5 Saying, “When will the new moon pass so that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath, so that we may open grain for sale—to make the ephah {eifah: dry measure} small and the shekel great, and to pervert the balances {moznei: weighing scales} of deceit?”
6 To buy the poor {dalim: powerless poor} for silver and the needy in exchange for sandals, and to sell the sweepings {mappal: sweepings} of the grain.
7 The LORD {YHWH, Oath-Swearing Judge} has sworn by the pride {geon: chief glory} of Jacob: Surely I will never forget all their deeds.
8 Upon this, will not the land tremble, and all who dwell {yoshev: reside} in it mourn? It will all rise up like the Nile {ka-or: Egyptian River}, and it will be driven out and sink down like the Nile of Egypt.
9 “And on that day,” declares the Lord {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Judge}, “I will cause the sun to go down at noon {batzohorayim: midday zenith}, and I will darken the earth in broad daylight.”
10 And I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} will turn your feasts {chaggeikhem: festival gatherings} into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth upon all loins and baldness upon every head. I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.
11 “Behold, days are approaching,” declares the Lord GOD {YHWH Adonai, Sovereign Decree-Giver}, “and I will bring a famine {raav: covenant judgment} into the land; it will not be a famine for bread, and it will not be a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the LORD {YHWH, Speaking Judge}.”
12 And they will totter from sea to sea, and from the north to the east; they will scour about to seek {levakesh: urgent pursuit} the word of the LORD {YHWH, Silent Sovereign}, but they will not find it.
13 In that day the beautiful virgins {betulot: unmarried women} and the young men will faint {titallafna: fainting reflexively} for thirst.
14 Those who swear by the guilt{ashmat: cult offense} of Samaria and say, “As your god{elohim: false deity} lives, O Dan,” and, “As the way to Beersheba lives,” will fall and not rise again.
