These are the words of Amos {Amos: Burden Bearer}, who was among the herdmen {noqedim: livestock breeder} from Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel, in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
And he said, “The LORD {YHWH, Roaring Judge} roars from Zion, and from Jerusalem He gives His voice; and the pastures {neot: grazing lands} of the shepherds will mourn, and the top of Carmel will wither.”
Thus the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge} says: Because of three transgressions {pishae: brazen rebellion} of Damascus, even because of four, I will not take it back, because they threshed Gilead with iron implements.
So I {YHWH, Righteous Judge} will dispatch fire against the house of Hazael, and it will devour the palaces {armenot: royal citadels} of Ben-hadad.
“I will break the bar {beriach: city gatebolt} of Damascus; I will cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven and the one who holds the scepter from the house of Eden; and the people of Aram shall go into exile to Kir,” says the LORD {YHWH, Sentence Giver}.
So says the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge}: For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not take it back, because they carried people off into complete captivity {galut: mass deportation}, to hand them over to Edom.
And I {YHWH: Sovereign Judge} will send fire upon the wall of Gaza {Azzah: Philistine stronghold}, and it will devour her palaces {armenoteha: royal citadels}.
I will cut off the one who dwells in Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter from Ashkelon; I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant {she'erit: surviving few} of the Philistines will perish, says the Lord GOD {YHWH Adonai, Judge of Cities}.
Thus the LORD {YHWH, Unyielding Judge} says: “Because of Tyre’s three transgressions, even four, I will not rescind it, because they handed over a complete exile to Edom and did not remember the covenant of brothers {achim: fraternal bond}.”
And I will send fire upon the wall {chomah: defensive rampart} of Tyre {tzor: coastal stronghold}, and it will consume her palaces.
Thus says the LORD {YHWH, Sentencing Judge}: For three rebellions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn it back, because he pursued his brother with the sword and destroyed his compassion {rachamav: brotherly pity}; his anger kept tearing on, and he kept his wrath forever.
And I will send fire {esh: punitive blaze} against Teman, and it will devour the palaces of Bozrah {Batsrah: Edomite stronghold}.
So speaks the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Judge}: “For three transgressions {pishe: willful rebellion} of the sons of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn it back, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead, in order to enlarge their border.”
And I {YHWH, Sentence-Executing King} will set a fire in the wall of Rabbah {rab-bah: Ammonite capital}, and it will devour her palaces with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of a whirlwind.
And their king shall go into exile {golah: Forced Displacement}, he himself and his princes together, says the LORD {YHWH, Supreme Judge}.
