Deuteronomy 22:25ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 22 : 25 Assault | Justice | Exclusivity
25. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the conditional particle ve’im {וְאִם | wə-ʾim} ‘and if’, introducing a protasis. The locative phrase ba-sadeh {בַּשָּׂדֶה | ba-śa-deh} ‘in the field’ marks a remote setting that heightens vulnerability. The imperfect verb yimtza {יִמְצָא | yim-ṣāʾ} ‘he finds’ presents a hypothetical scenario, with the direct object marker et {אֶת | ʾet} signaling hanaarah {הַנַּעֲרָה | ha-na-ʿa-rāh} ‘the young woman’, further specified by the participle hame‘orasah {הַמְאֹרָשָׂה | ha-mə-ʾō-rā-śāh} ‘the engaged’. The hifil perfect in ve-hechezik-bah {וְהֶחֱזִיק־בָּהּ | wə-hɛ-ḥe-zik-bāh} ‘and he seizes her’ intensifies the action, leading to veshakhav {וְשָׁכַב | wə-ša-ḵav} ‘and he lies’. The apodosis uses the jussive u-met {וּמֵת | u-mēt} ‘and he shall die’, followed by the relative clause with asher {אֲשֶׁר | ʾă-šer} ‘who’ and the construct levaddo {לְבַדּוֹ | lə-ḇad-dô} ‘alone’, which excludes the woman. The conditional–consequent pattern reflects biblical legal style.
