Deuteronomy 22:29ExegesisTAB

Deuteronomy 22 : 29 Marriage | Compensation | Permanence
29. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the vav-consecutive verb venatan {וְ֠נָתַן | wə-nā-ṯān} ‘and he shall give’, signaling a legal obligation. The participle hashokhev {הַשֹּׁכֵב | ha-š-šō-ḵēv} ‘who lays’ identifies the act of illicit intercourse, immediately followed by laavi hannaarah {לַאֲבִי הַנַּעֲרָה | la-’ă-ḇî han-nā-‘ă-rāh} to specify the payment’s recipient. The numeral-noun sequence chamishim kasef {חֲמִשִּׁים כָּסֶף | ḥă-miš-šîm kā-sĕp̄} defines the precise amount. The result clause velotihyeh le’ishah {וְלֽוֹ־תִהְיֶה לְאִשָּׁה | wə-lō-tî-hyēh lə-’îš-šāh} creates a binding marital status, and the causal takhat asher {תַּחַת אֲשֶׁר | ṯa-ḥat ’ă-šer} links it to the violation. Finally, the perpetual prohibition lo-yukhal shallehah kolyamav {לֹא־יוּכַל שַׁלְּחָהּ כָּל־יָמָֽיו | lō-yū-ḵal šal-le-ḥāh kol-yā-māw} is rendered as an enduring bar on divorce.
