Exodus 14:20ExegesisTAB

Exodus 14 : 20 Separation | Protection | Guidance
20. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative uses sequential vav-consecutive verbs such as vayavo {וַיָּבֹא | va-ya-vô} ‘came’ and vaya’er {וַיָּאֶר | va-ya-’êr} ‘gave light’ to mark unfolding action. The preposition bein {בֵּין | bêyn} frames the cloud’s location in balanced coordinate phrases. The paired subjects he‘anan {הֶֽעָנָן | hê-‘a-nān} ‘cloud’ and vehachoshekh {וְהַחֹשֶׁךְ | vê-ḥă-ḥô-shekh} ‘darkness’ set up a contrast that is then resolved by illumination of the night (et-hallailah {אֶת־הַלָּ֑יְלָה | ’et-ha-lai-lāh}). The reciprocal demonstratives zeh {זֶ֛ה | zeh} and el-zeh {אֶל־זֶ֖ה | ’el-zeh} with velo-karav {וְלֹא־קָרַ֥ב | vê-lō-kā-rav} reinforce complete separation through kol-hallailah {כָּל־הַלָּֽיְלָה | kol-ha-lai-lāh}. This structure highlights protective spatial ordering without explicitly naming the divine agent.
