1 And you, bring near {hakrev: Priestly Induction} to yourself Aaron your brother and his sons with him from among the sons of Israel to serve Me {li: Exclusive Service} as priests—Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu; Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron.
2 And you shall make sacred garments {bigdei: priestly vestments} for Aaron your brother, for glory {kavod: divine honor} and for beauty.
3 And you shall speak to all the wise-hearted {chakhmei-lev: skilled of heart} whom I {YHWH, Sovereign Commander} have filled with a spirit of wisdom, and they shall make the garments of Aaron to sanctify him to minister as priest to Me.
4 And these are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a checkered coat {ketonet: woven priestly coat}, a turban, and a sash. They shall make garments of holiness for Aaron your brother and his sons so they may serve as priests to Me {YHWH, Recipient of Service}.
5 And they shall take the gold, and the blue {tekhelet: blue-violet wool}, and the purple, and the scarlet {tola’at shani: crimson worm dye}, and the linen.
6 And they shall make the ephod {ha-efod: priestly vestment} of gold, blue, purple, scarlet thread, and fine twisted linen; the work of a skillful craftsman {choshev: seasoned artisan}.
7 Two shoulder-pieces {ketephot: garment supports} shall be provided for it at its two ends; and it shall be joined {khovrot: securely attached}.
8 And the waistband of his ephod, which is on it, shall be like its workmanship {ma'aseh: craftsmanship}, made of gold, blue and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen {mashzar: fine twisting}.
9 And you shall take two onyx stones {avnei: stones to be engraved}, and you shall engrave on them the names {shemot: formal designations} of the sons of Israel.
10 Six of their names shall be on the one stone, and the names of the remaining six shall be on the second {ha-sheinit: ordinal placement} stone according to their birth sequence {ketoledotam: birth order}.
11 You shall engrave the work of a stone craftsman, the seal-engravings {chotam: official emblem}, on the two stones bearing the names of the sons of Israel, and you shall make them mounted in settings {mishbetsot: ornate frames} of gold.
12 And you shall put the two stones upon the shoulder pieces of the ephod, stones of memorial for the sons of Israel; and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Witness} upon his two shoulders as a memorial {zikaron: perpetual reminder}.
13 And you shall make {ve’asita: craftsman’s directive} settings {mishbetsot: ornamental mountings} of gold.
14 And you shall make two chains of pure gold {zahav: precious metal}, braided into cords {avot: twisted bands}, and you shall place the chains on the settings.
15 And you shall make the breastpiece {choshen: decision pouch} of judgment, the work of a skilled artisan; like the work of the ephod {efod: sacred vestment} you shall make it of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet, and of twined linen.
16 It shall be square {ravu’a: equal on all sides} and folded double {kaful: double thickness}, a span its length and a span its width.
17 And you shall fill it with a millu’at {millu’at: stone setting} of stones, four rows of stones—a row of carnelian {odem: red jewel}, chrysolite and beryl—this is the first row.
18 And the second row shall be turquoise {nofekh: blue-green gemstone}, sapphire, and diamond {yahalom: durable gemstone}.
19 And the third row {hashlishi: sequence indicator} shall be leshem, shevo, and amethyst {akhlamah: rare gemstone}.
20 And the fourth row {harbi'i: numerical order} shall be tarshish, onyx, and jasper, mounted in gold in their settings {milluotam: crafted fittings}.
21 And the stones shall rest upon the names of the sons of Israel, twelve {shteim-esre: complete set}, each engraved like a seal {khotam: distinguishing mark} with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
22 And you shall make on the breastpiece {choshen: sacred breastpiece} chains {sharshet: interlinked chains} of braided work of pure gold.
23 And you shall make on the breastpiece {hoshen: high priest’s breastplate} two rings {tabbeot: gold loops} of gold, and you shall place the two rings on the two edges of the breastpiece.
24 And you shall attach the two chains {avotot: braided cords} of gold upon the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece {choshen: sacred breast ornament}.
25 And you shall place the two ends of the two chains upon the two settings {mishbetsot: ornamental mounts}, and you shall set them upon the shoulder-pieces of the ephod at the front {panav: forward side}.
26 And you shall make two gold rings and put them on the two edges of the breastpiece {choshen: priestly ornament}, on the side that faces the ephod, inward {bayitah: inner direction}.
27 And you shall make two rings {tabbe'ot: ceremonial loops} of gold, and you shall set them upon the two shoulder pieces of the ephod below, opposite its front, corresponding to its joint, above the band {kheshev: decorative waistband} of the ephod.
28 And they shall bind the breastpiece {choshen: sacred ornament} from its rings to the rings of the ephod {efod: ceremonial vestment} with a blue cord, so that it may lie on the band of the ephod and the breastpiece will not slip from the ephod.
29 And Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment {mishpat: legal decision} upon his heart, when he enters the Holy Place, for a memorial before the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Presence} continually.
30 And you shall put into the breastpiece of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon the heart of Aaron when he enters before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Arbiter}, and Aaron shall bear the judgment {mishpat: priestly decision} of the sons of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.
31 And you shall make the robe {me'il: priestly garment} of the ephod entirely of blue {techelet: richly dyed cloth}.
32 And the opening of its head shall lie at its center. A hem {safa: protective edge} shall encircle this opening, the work of a weaver {oreg: skilled craftsman}, like the opening of a collar, so that it will not be torn.
33 And you shall make on its hems pomegranates of blue {tekhelet: sea snail dye}, purple, and scarlet {tola'at: worm-dye thread}, on its hems all around, and bells of gold in their midst all around.
34 A golden bell and a pomegranate {rimon: sacred ornament}, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of the robe {me'il: priestly garment} all around.
35 And it shall be upon Aaron to minister, and its sound {kolo: distinctive ringing} shall be heard when he enters the holy place before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Presence}, and when he goes out, and he shall not die.
36 And you shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave {pituchei: skilled engraving} on it like the engraving of a seal, and inscribe “Holy to the LORD {YHWH, Sanctifier}.”
37 And you shall place it on a blue {tekhelet: sky-blue dye} cord, and it shall be on the turban {mitsnefet: priestly headdress} at its front.
38 And it shall be upon the forehead of Aaron, and Aaron shall bear the iniquity {avon: ritual guilt} of the sacred gifts that the sons of Israel consecrate for all their offerings. And it shall always be upon his forehead to be accepted for them before the LORD {YHWH, Accepting Presence}.
39 You shall weave the tunic of fine linen with patterned work, make the turban of fine linen, and make the sash as the work {maaseh: Skilled Craftsmanship} of an embroiderer {roqem: Decorative Artisan}.
40 And for the sons of Aaron, you shall make tunics{kutonot: Foundational Garments}, and you shall make sashes for them, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and for splendor{tif’aret: Ceremonial Adornment}.
41 And you shall clothe them upon Aaron your brother and his sons with him, and you shall anoint them, and you shall fill their hand {yad: symbolic authority}, and you shall sanctify them, that they may serve as priests to Me {YHWH, Worship Recipient}.
42 And you shall make for them linen undergarments {mikhnesei-bad: ritual undergarment} to cover the flesh of nakedness {ervah: shameful exposure}; they shall extend from the loins to the thighs.
43 They shall be upon Aaron and upon his sons when they come into the tent of meeting or when they approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place so that they do not bear guilt {avon: moral liability} and die. It shall be a lasting statute {chukkat: perpetual ordinance} for him and for his descendants after him.
