Ezekiel 17:19ExegesisTAB

Ezekiel 17 : 19 Oath | Covenant | Retribution
19. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with the causal particle lachen {לָכֵ֞ן | lā-ḵēn} ‘therefore,’ indicating a consequence. It continues with the prophetic formula koh amar {כֹּה־אָמַ֨ר | kō ʾā-mar} ‘thus says,’ introducing divine speech. The compound title Adonai Yahweh {אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֮ | ʾă-dō-nāy Yə-hō-wāh} asserts both lordship and covenantal identity. The oath phrase khay ani {חַי־אָנִי֒ | ḥay ʾā-nî} literally ‘life I’ functions as a strong asseverative, rendered idiomatically as ‘as I live.’ The conditional im-lo {אִם־לֹ֗א | ʾim-lōʾ} adds emphatic certainty. The objects alati {אָלָתִי֙ | ʾā-lā-tî} ‘my oath’ and u-britti {וּבְרִיתִ֖י | û-ḇə-rî-tî} ‘my covenant’ are linked by parallel clauses introduced by asher {אֲשֶׁ֣ר | ʾă-šer}, describing what he despised (bazah {בָּזָ֔ה | bā-zāh}) and what he broke (hefir {הֵפִ֑יר | hē-pîr}). The closing clause u-netattiv be-rosho {וּנְתַתִּ֖יו בְּרֹאשֽׁוֹ | û-nə-ṭā-tîw bə-rō-šō} places the oath and covenant ‘upon his head,’ symbolizing personal accountability. Em dashes preserve the Hebrew parallelism in English and the translation of im-lo as ‘surely’ conveys the verse’s intensified conditional force.
