2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite {hachitti: Heth descendant}, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon the Hivite {hachivi: Canaanite clan}.
3 And Basemath {Basemat: fragrant one}, daughter {bat: female child} of Ishmael, sister of Nebaioth.
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau {Esav: ancestor of Edom}, and Basemath bore Reuel {Reuel: friend of God}.
5 And Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau {Esav: firstborn of Isaac} who were born to him in the land of Canaan {kena'an: ancient territory}.
6 And Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household {nafshot beito: household dependents}, along with his livestock, all his animals, and all his possessions that he had acquired in the land of Canaan; and he departed to another land, away from {mi-pnei: outside the presence} his brother Jacob.
7 For their possessions {rekhush: accumulated wealth} had grown too vast for them to live side by side, and the land where they were sojourning {megureihem: temporary residence} was unable to support them because of their livestock.
8 So Esau {Esav: Hairy One} settled in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom {Edom: Red Land}.
9 And these are the generations {toledot: family line records} of Esau, the father of Edom {Edom: later nation}, in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of the sons of Esau {Esav: ancestor of Edom}, Eliphaz the son of Adah {Adah: Edomite matriarch}, the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau.
11 And the sons of Eliphaz {Eliphaz: ancestor of Esau} were Teman {Teman: leading tribal line}, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 And Timna was a concubine {pilegesh: recognized secondary wife} to Eliphaz, the son of Esau, and she bore to Eliphaz Amalek. These are the sons {bnei: male-line descendants} of Adah, the wife of Esau.
13 And these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these were the sons of Basemath {basemat: Hebrew name origin}, wife {eshet: legal marriage bond} of Esau.
14 And these were the sons of Oholibamah {oholivamah: Edomite mother}, daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon, the wife of Esau {Esav: family ancestor}. She bore to Esau Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
15 These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau {Esav: ancestor of Edom}, the sons of Eliphaz {Eliphaz: prominent firstborn}, the firstborn of Esau: Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz.
16 Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek; these were the chiefs {allufei: tribal leaders} of Eliphaz in the land of Edom—these were the sons {bnei: direct offspring} of Adah.
17 And these are the sons of Reuel, the son of Esau: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, Chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs {alluf: clan leaders} of Reuel in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Basemath {Basemat: fragrant woman}, wife of Esau.
18 And these are the sons {benei: male descendants} of Oholibamah, the wife of Esau: Chief Jeush, Chief Jalam, Chief Korah. These are the chiefs {allufei: tribal leaders} of Oholibamah, daughter of Anah, the wife of Esau.
19 These are the sons of Esau {Esav: ancestor of Edom}, and these are their chiefs; he is Edom {Edom: nation from Esau}.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite {chori: cave-dwelling people}, inhabitants of the land {arets: local territory}: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah.
21 And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan—these were the chiefs {allufei: tribal leaders} of the Horites {hachori: indigenous clan}, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.
22 And the sons {ben: male descendants} of Lotan were Hori and Hemam, and the sister of Lotan was Timna {timna: noted Edomite woman}.
23 And these are the sons {bene: male descendants} of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam {Onam: clan founder}.
24 And these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. He is Anah, who found the hot springs {ha-yemim: hot springs} in the wilderness while pasturing {biroto: tending animals} the donkeys for Zibeon his father.
25 And these are the children {bnei: clan descendants} of Anah {anah: Edomite forefather}: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah.

29 These are the chiefs {allufei: clan rulers} of the Horite {hachori: Seir dwellers}: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah.
30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, Chief Dishan—these are the chiefs of the Horite {khori: cave-dweller clan}, according to their clans {alluf: tribal leader system}, in the land of Seir.
31 And these are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom, in the time before any king {melekh: royal authority} ruled over the children of Israel {Yisra'el: covenant people}.
32 And Bela {bela: early Edomite ruler} son of Beor became king in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah {dinhavah: royal center}.
33 And Bela died {vayamat: end of reign}, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place {takhtav: royal succession}.
34 And Jobab died, and Husham {Khusham: royal successor} from the land of the Temanite {ha-teymani: southern-region inhabitant} reigned after him.
35 And Chusham died, and Hadad son of Bedad reigned {vayimlokh: exercised royal rule} in his place; he was the one who defeated Midian in the territory {bisdeh: open countryside} of Moab, and the name of his city was Avith.
36 And Hadad died, and Samlah from Masreqah {Masreqah: regional town} became king in his place {takhtav: royal succession}.
37 And Samlah died, and Shaul from Rechovot {rechovot: town of broad spaces} on the river reigned in his place {takhtav: succeeding him in authority}.
38 And Saul {Shaul: requested one} died, and Baal-Hanan the son of Akbor reigned in his place {takhtav: succeeding role}.
39 And Baal-Hanan son of Akbor died, and Hadar reigned {vayimlokh: assumed kingship} in his place. The name of his city was Pau, and the name of his wife was Mehetabel {Meheitavel: benefited by God}, daughter of Matred, daughter of Mey-Zahab.
40 And these are the names of the chiefs of Esau {Esav: forefather of Edom}, according to their clans {mishpechotam: extended kin groups}, according to their places, by their names—chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Yetet.
41 Chief Oholibamah {Oholibamah: Edomite clan mother}, Chief Elah {Elah: Edomite clan leader}, Chief Pinon.
42 Chief Kenaz {qenaz: Edomite clan head}, Chief Teman {teman: southern Edomite group}, Chief Mibzar.
