1 In the year that Tartan {tartan: Assyrian commander-in-chief} came to Ashdod {ashdod: coastal Philistine city}, when Sargon king of Assyria sent him, he fought against Ashdod and captured it.
2 At that time the LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Speaker} spoke by the hand of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, saying, “Go, and loosen the sackcloth {saq: coarse mourning garment} from your loins, and take off your sandals from your feet.” And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
3 And the LORD {YHWH, Declarer of Signs} said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has walked naked and barefoot for three years as a sign and a wonder against Egypt and against Cush {kush: southern land}.”
4 So the king of Assyria will lead away the captives {shevi: forced deportees} of Egypt and the exiles {galut: forced resettlement} of Cush, young men and old men, naked and barefoot, and with bare buttocks, the nakedness of Egypt.
5 And they will be afraid and be ashamed of Cush, their expectation {mabbatam: source of hope}, and of Egypt, their glory {tifartam: honored status}.
6 And the inhabitant of this coastland will say in that day, “Behold, such is our expectation {mabbaten: hopeful look}, where we fled for help, to be delivered {lehinatzel: to be rescued} from the king of Assyria, and how shall we escape?”
