Jeremiah 19:4ExegesisTAB

Jeremiah 19 : 4 Idolatry | Abandonment | Bloodshed
4. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with the causal conjunction yaan {יַ֣עַן | yaʿan} ‘because’, introducing the reason for divine action. The relative pronoun asher {אֲשֶׁ֣ר | ʾă-šer} ‘that’ links successive clauses. Three Piel imperfect verbs with vav consecutive—vaynakkeru {וַֽיְנַכְּר֞וּ | wa-ye-nak-kə-rû} ‘and they have estranged’, vayeqatteruvo {וַיְקַטְּרוּ־בוֹ֙ | wa-ye-qat-tə-rû-vo} ‘and they have burned incense’, and umal’u {וּמָֽלְא֛וּ | û-mā-l-’û} ‘and they have filled’—structure a cascading list of violations. The prepositional phrase et-hamakom {אֶת־הַמָּק֤וֹם | ʾet-ham-mā-qōm} appears twice to mark “this place” {hazzeh}, focusing the actions on the sanctuary. A threefold relative clause asher lo-yedaum hemmah vaavoteihem umalkhei Yehudah specifies universal ignorance of these gods, underscoring communal guilt. The final image, dam neqiyyim {דַּ֥ם נְקִיִּֽם | dam neqiyyim} ‘blood of the innocent’, conveys the gravity of sacrificial violence.
