Jeremiah 20:15ExegesisTAB

Jeremiah 20 : 15 Curse | Birth | Joy
15. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with arur {אָר֣וּר | ʾā-rūr} ‘cursed,’ setting an explicit curse formula. A relative clause uses ha-ish {הָאִ֗ישׁ | hā-ʾîš} asher {אֲשֶׁ֨ר | ʾă-šer} bissar {בִּשַּׂ֤ר | bis-sar} ‘brought news,’ where the pi‘el perfect denotes an emphatic report. The direct-object marker et {אֶת־ | ʾet} marks avi {אָבִי֙ | ʾā-ḇî} ‘my father’ as recipient, and le-mor {לֵאמֹ֔ר | lē-mōr} ‘saying’ introduces the content clause. That clause employs the pu‘al perfect yullad {יֻֽלַּד־ | yu-lad} ‘has been born’ with the sequence lekha ben zakhar {לְךָ֖ בֵּ֣ן זָכָ֑ר | lə-ḵā bēn zā-ḵār} ‘to you a male child,’ preserving the order of announcement. Finally, the paired verbs sam-mē-aḥ {שַׂמֵּ֖חַ | sam-mē-aḥ} ‘causing to rejoice’ and sim-mo-ḥā-hū {שִׂמֳּחָֽהוּ | sim-mo-ḥā-hū} ‘he made him rejoice’ form a resultative Waw sequence that intensifies the joy response.
