John 15:21ExegesisTAB

John 15 : 21 Persecution | Authority | Ignorance
21. Linguistic Exegesis
alla {ἀλλὰ | allà} ‘but’ opens with a strong adversative that turns the statement toward opposition. The fronted phrase tauta panta {ταῦτα πάντα | taûta pánta} ‘all these things’ concentrates the total scope of the coming hostility before the verb, giving it emphasis. The future poiēsousin {ποιήσουσιν | poiḗsousin} ‘they will do’ presents the action as certain, and eis hymas {εἰς ὑμᾶς | eis hymâs} marks the disciples as the target. The causal phrase dia to onoma mou {διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου | dià tò ónomá mou} ties the hostility to allegiance to Jesus’ name and identity. The clause hoti ouk oidasin {ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν | hóti ouk oídasin} ‘because they do not know’ moves from outward action to inward reason, and ton pempsanta me {τὸν πέμψαντά με | tòn pémpsantá me} ‘the One who sent Me’ identifies the Father through His sending of the Son. The syntax therefore links persecution to ignorance: rejection of the Son flows from rejection of the Sender.
