John 16:10ExegesisTAB

John 16 : 10 Righteousness | Departure | Vision
10. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse begins with a topical prepositional phrase, peri dikaiosynes {περὶ δικαιοσύνης | perí dikaiosynēs} ‘about righteousness,’ which frames the subject before the explanation is given. The connective de {δέ | dé} marks a gentle transition, not a sharp reversal. The subordinating conjunction hoti {ὅτι | hóti} ‘because’ introduces the reason for the statement: Jesus’ departure is directed pros ton patera {πρὸς τὸν πατέρα | prós ton patéra} ‘toward the Father.’ The motion verb hypago {ὑπάγω | hypágō} ‘I am going’ is present tense in form but future-oriented in sense, since the departure is imminent and decisive. The final coordinated clause kai ouketi theoreite me {καὶ οὐκέτι θεωρεῖτέ με | kaí oukéti theōreíte me} ‘and you no longer see Me’ states the resulting condition for the disciples. The adverb ouketi {οὐκέτι | oukéti} ‘no longer’ tightens the temporal boundary, and the present-tense theoreite {θεωρεῖτέ | theōreíte} is naturally rendered in English as a future result because Jesus’ going to the Father will end ordinary visible access to Him.
