| 8. Linguistic Exegesis The verse opens with the vav-consecutive verb vayetar {וַיֶּעְתַּ֥ר | wayyēṭṭar} indicating sequential action. Manoah’s entreaty el-Yahweh {אֶל־יְהוָה | ʾel Yəhōwāh} “to the LORD” is intensified by the particle bi {בִּ֣י | bī} and the divine title Adonai {אֲדוֹנָ֔י | ʾădōnāy}, marking respectful petition. The noun phrase ish haElohim {אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים | ʾîš hāʾĕlōhîm} “man of God” is modified by the relative clause asher shalachta {אֲשֶׁר שָׁלַחְתָּ | ʾăšer šālaḥtā} “whom You sent.” The imperfect yavona {יָבוֹא־נָ֥א | yāḇōnāʾ} with od {עוֹד֙ | ʿōḏ} “again” conveys the renewal of the request. The causative Hiphil veyorenu {וְיוֹרֵ֕נוּ | wə-yōrēnû} “and he will instruct us” expresses desire for guidance. The question mahnaʿaseh {מַה־נַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה | mah-naʿăśeh} “what we shall do” closes with the purpose phrase lanaʿar hayullad {לַנַּעַר הַיּוּלָּד | la-nāʿar hayyūllāḏ} “for the boy who is to be born.” |
