Judges 13:9ExegesisTAB

Judges 13 : 9 Hearing | Visitation | Absence
9. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative unfolds with the vav-consecutive clause wayyishma {וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע | wayyišma‘} ‘and he heard’, which initiates divine responsiveness by Elohim {הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים | hāʼĕlōhîm}. The phrase beqol Manoach {בְּק֣וֹל מָנ֑וֹחַ | bə-qōl mānōaḥ} uses kol in construct to denote Manoach’s appeal. In the coordinated clause wayyavo malakh ha’elohim od el-ha’ishah {וַיָּבֹא מַלְאַךְ הָאֱלֹהִים ע֜וֹד אֶל־הָאִשָּׁה} ‘and the angel of God came again to the woman’, the adverb ’od {ע֜וֹד | ʿōd} marks a repeated theophany. The verb form yoshevet {יוֹשֶׁבֶת | yōšeḇet} conveys continuous action, and the existential ’en {אֵ֥ן | ʾên} with ’immāh {עִמָּֽהּ | ʿimmāh} ‘was not with her’ underscores Manoach’s absence, heightening narrative tension.
