Leviticus 16 : 9 Priesthood | Sacrifice | Atonement
9. Linguistic Exegesis
The verb vehikriv {וְהִקְרִיב | wə-hiq-rîv} ‘and he shall bring near’ uses the Hiphil imperfect with vav-consecutive to signal Aaron’s presentation action. The noun phrase ’et-hasaʿir {אֶת־הַשָּׂעִיר | ’et-ha-sāʿîr} ‘the goat’ is marked by the direct object particle ’et and definite article to indicate a specific sacrificial animal. The relative clause consists of ’asher {אֲשֶׁר | ’ăšer} ‘which’ + alah {עָלָה | ‘ālah} ‘has come up’ + alav {עָלָיו | ’alāw} ‘upon it’ + hagoral {הַגּוֹרָל | ha-gōrāl} ‘the lot’, modifying the goat by a perfect-tense action of selection. The prepositional phrase la-Yahweh {לַיהוָה | la-Yahweh} ‘to the LORD’ assigns the goat to divine possession. The verb veasahu {וְעָשָׂהוּ | wə-’ăśāhû} ‘and he shall make it’ with hattat {חַטָּאת | ḥaṭ-ṭāṯ} ‘sin offering’ uses the vav-consecutive and pronominal suffix to denote transformation of the animal into its cultic function. Hebrew VSO order is rendered into English SVO for clarity while preserving the sequence of ritual acts.
