1 After the death {mot: loss of life} of Aaron’s two sons—when they came near before the LORD {YHWH, Holy Judge} and died—the LORD spoke to Moses.
2 And the LORD {YHWH, Sanctuary Lawgiver} said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron your brother that he must not enter at any time into the sanctuary inside the curtain, before the atonement cover {kapporet: reconciliation lid} that is on the ark, so that he will not die; for I will appear in the cloud upon the atonement cover.”
3 With this Aaron shall enter the holy place {kodesh: sanctuary} with a bull and a son of the herd {ben-bakar: young bull} for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
4 He shall put on the sacred linen tunic {ketonet-bad: priestly outer garment}, and the linen undergarments shall be upon his flesh; he shall tie with the linen sash and wrap himself with the linen turban. These are holy garments; so he shall bathe himself with water {bamayim: ritual cleansing medium} and put them on.
5 And from the assembly of the sons of Israel, he shall take two male goats for a sin offering {chatat: ritual purification}, and one ram for a burnt offering {olah: complete dedication}.
6 And Aaron {Aharon: High Priest Mediator} shall bring near the bull of the sin offering which is for himself, and he shall make atonement {khipper: ceremonial covering} for himself and for his household.
7 Then he shall take the two goats and stand them before the LORD {YHWH, Worship Receiver} at the entrance {peṭaḥ: threshold} to the tent of meeting.
8 And Aaron shall cast lots {goralot: sacred lots} upon the two goats, one lot for the LORD {YHWH, Covenant Purifier}, and one for Azazel.
9 And Aaron shall bring near the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD {YHWH, Sacrifice Receiver}, and he shall make it a sin offering {chatat: atonement sacrifice}.
10 But the goat {saʿir: sacrificial animal} on which the lot fell for Azazel shall be presented alive before the LORD {YHWH, Atonement Grantor} in order to make atonement over it and send it into the wilderness to Azazel.
11 And Aaron shall bring the bull for the sin offering {chatat: purification rite} which is for himself and shall make atonement {kipper: covering guilt} for himself and for his house, and he shall slaughter the bull for the sin offering which is for himself.
12 And he shall take a full censer of coals of fire from upon the altar before the LORD {YHWH, Holy Dwelling} and two handfuls of finely beaten incense {qetoret: sacred blend}, and he shall bring it inside the veil.
13 And he shall put the incense on the fire before the LORD {YHWH, Divine Judge}, and the cloud of the incense shall cover the atonement cover {kapporet: place of propitiation} on the testimony so that he will not die.
14 And he shall take from the blood of the bull and, with his finger {etsba: ritual instrument}, sprinkle it upon the face of the atonement cover {kapporet: place of atonement}, eastward; and before the atonement cover he shall sprinkle seven times from the blood with his finger.
15 And he shall slaughter the male goat of the sin offering {seʿîr ha-ḥaṭṭāṯ: designated for atonement} which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the bull’s blood, and sprinkle it on the atonement cover {kappōreṯ: mercy seat} and before the atonement cover.
16 And he shall make atonement for the holy place {kodesh: set-apart sanctuary} from the impurities of the sons of Israel and from their transgressions for all their sins. And in the same way he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells among them in the midst of their impurities {tumotam: ritual uncleanness}.
17 And no person shall be in the tent {ohel moed: appointed assembly site} of meeting when he enters to make atonement {kippur: covering for sin} in the holy place until he comes out, and he shall make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
18 Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD {YHWH, Atonement Receiver}, and he shall make atonement {kipper: ritual purification} for it. He shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar all around.
19 And he shall sprinkle on it from the blood with his finger seven times, and he shall purify {tiharo: make ceremonially clean} it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses {tumot: ritual impurities} of the sons of Israel.
20 And when he has finished making atonement {mikapper: covering sin} for the Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat {sair: scapegoat offering}.
21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat {sair: scapegoat for communal transference} and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions for all their sins, and he shall put them on the goat’s head. Then he shall send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man appointed {itti: ready and appointed man}.
22 And the goat will bear upon itself all their iniquities{avonotam: moral failings} to a land of separation, and he shall release the goat in the wilderness{midbar: uninhabited region}.
23 Then Aaron {Aharon: High Priest} shall enter the tent of meeting and remove the linen garments {bigdei habad: sacred vestments} which he had put on when he entered the holy place, and he shall leave them there.
24 And he shall wash his flesh in water in a holy place {makom kadosh: sanctuary area}, and he shall put on his garments, and he shall go out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and he shall make atonement {khipper: atoning reconciliation} for himself and for the people.
25 And he shall burn the fat {khelev: choicest portion} of the sin offering on the altar {mizbeach: place of sacrifice}.
26 The one who sends the goat to Azazel {la-azazel: designated destination} must wash his clothes and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp {machaneh: assembly area}.
27 The bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought to make atonement in the holy place, shall be brought out outside the camp; and their skins {orotam: hides} and their flesh {besaram: meat} and their dung shall be burned in the fire.
28 And the one who burns them shall wash his garments {beged: priestly garment} and bathe his flesh {basar: physical body} in water, and afterward he may enter the camp.
29 And it shall be for you an everlasting statute {olam: perpetual obligation}; in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls {nafesh: life essence}, and you shall do no work of any kind, whether native-born or sojourner among you.
30 Because on this day atonement will be made for you to purify you from all your sins before the LORD {YHWH, Atoning Judge}; you shall be purified {titharu: ritual cleansing}.
31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls{nafshotekhem: life essence}; it is an everlasting statute{chukat: perpetual decree}.
32 And the priest {kohen: set-apart mediator} who is anointed and ordained to serve in place of his father shall make atonement, and he shall put on the linen garments {bad: fine linen fabric}.
33 And he shall make atonement for the sanctuary {mikdash: sacred place} of holiness, and for the tent of meeting, and for the altar; and he shall make atonement upon the priests and upon all the people of the assembly {kahal: gathered community}.
34 And this shall be for you an everlasting statute to make atonement for the sons of Israel from all their sins once in the year. And he did as the LORD {YHWH, Law Giver} commanded Moses {Mosheh: appointed leader}.
