1 And it came to pass when the wall was rebuilt {nivnetah: functional restoration} and I set up the doors, the gatekeepers {sho’arim: entrance custodians}, the singers, and the Levites were appointed.
2 And I appointed Hanani my brother and Hananiah, commander of the citadel, over Jerusalem, for he was as a man of integrity {’emet: trustworthiness}, and he feared God {’ĕlōhîm, Reverent Example} more than many.
3 And I said to them, “The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the heat {khom: intense midday heat} of the sun; while they are yet standing there, let them shut the doors and bar them. Appoint guards {mishmerot: protective watches} from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his watch and each opposite his own house.”
4 And the city was wide and large, and the people inside it were few {meʿat: only a small number}, and no houses had been rebuilt {benuyim: not yet built up again} yet.
5 And my God {Elohai, Heart Mover} put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the officials, and the people for genealogical registration {hit’yaches: listing by ancestry}, and I found a book of the genealogy of those who came up at first, and I found it written in it.
6 These are the people of the province who came up as returnees {ha‘olim: those ascending to Jerusalem} from captivity, whom Nebuchadnezzar {nevukhadnetzar: Babylonian monarch} king of Babylon had exiled. They returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each man to his own city.
7 Those who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah: the number of the men {anshei: representative males in genealogy} of the people {am: national community} of Israel.
8 The descendants {benei: clan designation} of Parosh {Parosh: clan head} numbered two thousand one hundred seventy-two.
9 And the sons {benei: genealogical designation} of Shephatiah {shephatyah: Yahweh Judges} numbered 372.
