Numbers 16 : 5 Holiness | Selection | Approach
5. Linguistic Exegesis
The narrative opens with the vav-consecutive Piel imperfect form vay-yedabber {וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר | way-yə-ḏab-bēr} ‘and he spoke,’ introducing direct discourse. Two coordinated prepositional phrases, ʾel-Qōraḥ {אֶל־קֹ֜רַח | ʾel-Qō-raḥ} and wə-ʾel-ʿădātô {וְאֶֽל־עֲדָתוֹ | wə-ʾel-ʿă-dā-tō}, define the full audience. The infinitive construct leʾēmōr {לֵאמֹר | leʾ-ē-mōr} marks the speech introduction. The noun bōqer {בֹּ֠קֶר | bō-qer} sets the temporal frame “morning.” The imperfect wə-yōḏaʿ {וְיֹדַ֨ע | wə-yō-ḏaʿ} with Yahweh {יְהוָ֧ה | Yə-hō-wāh} forms a future declaration. Direct objects follow the marker ʾet {אֶת־ | ʾet}, introducing both ʾašer lō {אֲשֶׁר־ל֛וֹ | ʾa-šer lō} and ha-qāḏôš {הַקָּד֖וֹשׁ | ha-qā-ḏôš}. Sequential Hiphil imperatives wə-hiqrîḇ ... yaqrîḇ {וְהִקְרִ֣יב ... יַקְרִ֥יב | wə-hiq-rîv ... yaq-rîv} underscore divine initiative. The relative clause yivḥar-bô {יִבְחַר־בּ֖וֹ | yiv-ḥar-bô} ‘whom he will choose’ specifies the chosen. English preserves Hebrew parataxis and repetition to convey emphasis on divine selection.
