Revelation 21:3ExegesisTAB

Revelation 21 : 3 Presence | Covenant | Belonging
3. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with kai {καὶ | kaí} linking this vision to the preceding context, while ekousa {ἤκουσα | ḗkousa} introduces the seer’s personal auditory perception. The genitive phrase phones megalēs {φωνῆς μεγάλης | phōnḗs megalḗs} ‘of a great voice’ characterizes the sound’s magnitude, and its heavenly origin is marked by ek tou thronou {ἐκ τοῦ θρόνου | ek toû thrónou} ‘from the throne.’ The participle legouses {λεγούσης | legoúsēs} ‘saying’ forms a genitive absolute–like clause attributing the proclamation to the voice. The particle idou {Ἰδοὺ | idou} ‘behold’ draws attention to the announcement. The subject hē skene tou theou {ἡ σκηνὴ τοῦ θεοῦ | hē skēnḕ tou theoû} ‘the dwelling of God’ evokes tabernacle imagery, and meta ton anthrōpōn {μετὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων | metá tôn anthrṓpōn} ‘with the people’ universalizes divine presence. The verb skenōsei {σκηνώσει | skēnṓsei} ‘he will dwell’ intensifies relational intimacy, echoed by met auton {μετʼ αὐτῶν | metʼ autōn} ‘with them.’ The emphatic autoi laoi autou esontai {αὐτοὶ λαοὶ αὐτοῦ | autoí laoí autoû ésontai} ‘they shall be peoples of him’ underscores covenant belonging, and the climactic autos ho theos met auton estai {αὐτὸς ὁ θεὸς μετʼ αὐτῶν | autòs ho theós metʼ autōn éstai} ‘God Himself will be with them’ completes a chiasm of mutual indwelling.
