1 And I saw a new {kainos: fresh in kind} heaven and a new earth, because the former heaven and the former earth had gone away, and the sea {thalassa: broad waters} existed no longer.
2 And I saw the holy city—the new Jerusalem—coming down from God {Theos, Heavenly Architect} out of heaven, made ready like a bride {nymphe: covenant partner} arrayed for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God {Theos, Indwelling Presence} is with people; He will live with them, they will be His people {laoi: covenant community}, and God Himself will be with them.”
4 And He {Theos, Gentle Comforter} will wipe away every tear from their eyes; death {thanatos: end of life} will no longer exist, nor will there be mourning, nor outcry, nor pain, because the former things have passed away.
5 And the One seated on the throne said, “Behold, I {Theos, Cosmic Restorer} am renewing all things.” Then He says, “Write, because these words {logoi: divine declarations} are faithful and true.”
6 And He {Theos, Supreme Completer} said to me, “It has come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the one who thirsts, I will give from the spring of the water of life as a gift {dorean: without payment}.”
7 The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be God {Theos, Covenant Reward Giver} to him, and he will be a son {huios: full legal heir} to Me.
8 But the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable ones and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars will have their portion in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone {theio: sulfur judgment sign}, which is the second death {thanatos: final irreversible ruin}.
9 One of the seven angels holding the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues approached me and declared, “Come, and I will show you the bride {nymphe: eschatological bride}, the wife of the Lamb {arnion, Self-Giving Redeemer}.”
10 And he conveyed me in the Spirit {pneumati: spiritual state} onto a lofty and expansive mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God {Theos, Source Of Revelation}.
11 Having the glory of God {Theos, Radiant Glory-Giver}, her brilliance was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone {iaspidi: translucent jewel}, shining like crystal.
12 It had a great and high wall {teichos: protective barrier}, with twelve gates; at the gates were twelve angels and names inscribed, which are those of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel {Israel: national ancestor}.
13 From the east, three gates {pylon: monumental entrances}; and from the north {borra: northern quarter}, three gates; and from the south, three gates; and from the west, three gates.
14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations {themelios: structural base}, and on them were twelve names—the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb {arnion, Redeeming Lord}.
15 And the one speaking with me had a golden measuring reed {kalamos: ancient measuring tool}, in order to measure the city {polis: ordered dwelling place}, its gates, and its wall.
16 And the city lies four-square, and its length is the same as its width; and he measured the city with the reed {kalamos: measuring rod}—twelve thousand stadia {stadios: ancient distance unit}. Its length and width and height are equal.
17 And he measured its wall {teichos: protective boundary}: one hundred forty-four cubits, by the measure of a man, which is also that of an angel {angelos: heavenly messenger}.
18 And the structure of its wall was jasper {iaspis: precious stone}, and the city was pure gold, like clear glass {hyalos: transparent stone}.
19 The foundations {themelios: structural base} of the city’s wall were embellished with every precious stone {lithos: cut gemstone}: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, and the fourth emerald.
20 The fifth was sardonyx {sardonyx: layered gemstone}, the sixth was sardius, the seventh was chrysolite, the eighth was beryl, the ninth was topaz, the tenth was chrysoprase {chrysoprasos: greenish gem}, the eleventh was jacinth, and the twelfth was amethyst.
21 And the twelve gates {pylones: monumental entrances} were twelve pearls; each gate was made from a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass {hyalos: clear shining substance}.
22 And I did not see a temple in her, because the Lord God the Almighty {Kyrios Theos Pantokrator: Indwelling Sanctuary} and the Lamb {Arnion: Slain Redeemer} are her temple.
23 And the city has no need of the sun or the moon to shine upon it, because the glory of God {Theos, Radiant Light-Giver} has bestowed its light upon it, and the Lamb {Arnion, Slain Redeemer} is its lamp.
24 And the nations {ethne: multiethnic peoples} will walk by her light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory {doxa: public honor display} into her.
25 And her gates {pylones: city entrances} will never be shut in the daytime, for night {nyx: time of darkness} will not exist there.
26 And they will carry into her the glory {doxan: radiant splendor} and the honor of the nations {ethnon: world peoples}.
27 And nothing unclean, nor anyone practicing abomination {bdelugma: detestable evil} or falsehood, shall ever enter it—only those who are written in the book of life of the Lamb {arnion, Sacrificial Redeemer}.
