Zechariah 13 : 2 Purification | Judgment | Idolatry
2. Linguistic Exegesis
The prophetic vav-consecutive vehayah {וְהָיָה֩ | wə-hā-yāh} ‘and it shall come to pass’ introduces a future prophetic declaration. The temporal frame bayom hahu {בַיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא | ba-yôm ha-hūʾ} ‘on that day’ sets an eschatological horizon. Neum {נְאֻם | nə-ʾūm} ‘declaration’ with Yahweh tsevaot {יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת | Yə-hō-wāh ṣə-ḇā-ʾōṯ} emphasizes sovereign authority. The Hiphil verbs akhrit {אַכְרִ֞ית | ʾak-rît} ‘I will cut off’ and aavir {אַעֲבִ֥יר | ʾa-ʿă-bîr} ‘I will remove’ exert causative force on shemot haatsabim {שְׁמוֹת הָֽעֲצַבִּים | šə-mōt hā-ʿa-ṣab-bîm} and ruach hatumah {רוּחַ הַטֻּמְאָ֖ה | rūaḥ ha-ṭum-ʾāh}, respectively. The negative result clause velo yizzakheru od {וְלֹ֥א יִזָּכְר֖וּ ע֑וֹד | wə-lōʾ yiz-zā-ḵə-rū ʿōḏ} establishes permanent non-remembrance. The conjunction vegam {וְגַ֧ם | wə-gam} links parallel judgments, highlighting comprehensive purification.
