Zechariah 14 : 17 Worship | Kingship | Judgment
17. Linguistic Exegesis
The opening circumstantial clause begins with vehayah {וְ֠הָיָה | wə-hā-yāh} ‘and it will be’, introducing a prophetic result. The relative asher {אֲשֶׁר | ʾă-šer} ‘that/whoever’ sets the conditional protasis, with the Qal imperfect yaʿaleh {יַעֲלֶה | ya-ʿă-leh} ‘goes up’ marking ongoing action. The prepositional phrase mishpechot ha-aretz {מִשְׁפְּח֤וֹת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ | mish-pə-ḥōt hā-ʾā-reṣ} ‘families of the earth’ defines the universal subject. The Hithpael infinitive le-hishtachavot {לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲווֹת | lə-hish-ta-ḥă-voṯ} ‘to bow down’ functions as purpose toward the king le-melekh {לְמֶ֖לֶךְ | lə-me-lekh} ‘to the king’. The compound divine title Yahweh tsevaot {יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת | Yə-hō-wāh tse-vā-ʾōt} ‘the LORD of hosts’ designates the object of worship. The adversative ve-lo {וְלֹ֥א | və-lōʾ} ‘and not’ introduces the apodosis, and yihyeh ha-geshem {יִהְיֶ֥ה הַגָּֽשֶׁם | yih-yēh ha-gā-šɛm} ‘there will be no rain’ marks the withholding of blessing. This condition illustrates a covenantal principle: failure to honor the king and divine presence through pilgrimage results in drought.
