1 Samuel 14:45ExegesisTAB

1 Samuel 14 : 45 Deliverance | Covenant | Preservation
45. Linguistic Exegesis
The opening vav-consecutive way-yō-mer {וַיֹּאמֶר | way-yō-mer} “and he said” introduces the objection by hā-ʿām {הָעָם | hā-ʿām} “the people” addressed to ʾel-Šā’ûl {אֶל־שָׁאוּל | ʾel-šā’ûl} “Saul.” The interrogative marker ḥă-yō-na-tān {הֲיוֹנָתָן | ḥă-yō-na-tān} “Shall Jonathan?” intensifies the rhetorical question. A relative clause with ʾă-šer {אֲשֶׁר | ʾă-šer} “who” and perfect ʿā-śāh {עָשָׂה | ʿā-śāh} describes his deed, hǎ-ye-šû-ʿāh ha-ge-ḏō-lāh ha-zōʾṯ bə-yis-rā-ʾēl {הַיְשׁוּעָה הַגְּדוֹלָה הַזֹּאת בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל | hǎ-ye-šû-ʿāh ha-ge-ḏō-lāh ha-zōʾṯ bə-yis-rā-ʾēl} “has accomplished this great deliverance in Israel.” The oath ḥai-Yahweh {חַי־יְהוָה | ḥai-yə-hō-wāh} “as the LORD lives” underscores conviction. The conditional ʾim-yip-pōl {אִם־יִפֹּל | ʾim-yip-pōl} “if he should fall” and merism from seʿar to ʾar-ṣāh “hair… ground” conveys absolute preservation. The causal kî-ʿim-ʾĕ-lō-hîm {כִּי־עִם־אֱלֹהִים | kî-ʿim-ʾĕ-lō-hîm} “for with God” links divine agency. Finally, way-yi-pə-dû ʾet-Yō-na-tān {וַיִּפְדּוּ אֶת־יוֹנָתָן | way-yi-pə-dû ʾet-yō-na-tān} “and they rescued Jonathan” concludes the narrative with communal deliverance. The English order preserves Hebrew emphasis while ensuring clarity.
