Daniel 9:21ExegesisTAB

Daniel 9 : 21 Prayer | Vision | Messenger
21. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with ve-od {וְע֛וֹד | wə-ʿōḏ} ‘and still’, marking concurrent action. The circumstantial participial phrase ani medabber battefillah {אֲנִ֥י מְדַבֵּ֖ר בַּתְּפִלָּ֑ה | ʾă-nî mə-da-bbēr ba-tə-fi-llāh} conveys Daniel’s ongoing prayer. The definite article in vejaish gavriel {וְהָאִ֣ישׁ גַּבְרִיאֵ֡ל | wə-hā-ʾîš gav-ri-ʾēl} introduces Gabriel as a known figure. The relative clause asher raiti vechazon battechlilah {אֲשֶׁר֩ רָאִ֨יתִי בֶחָז֤וֹן בַּתְּחִלָּה֙ | ʾă-šer rā-ʾî-tî ve-ḥā-zōn ba-tə-ḥil-lāh} links him to the initial vision. The Hophal participle muaf bi-aaf {מֻעָ֣ף בִּיעָ֔ף | mū-ʿāf bi-ʿāf} idiomatically ‘caused to fly with swiftness’ describes his approach, while the Qal participle nogea elay {נֹגֵ֣עַ אֵלַ֔י | nō-gē-ʿa ʾê-lay} ‘touching me’ depicts continuous contact. The temporal phrase ke-et minchat-erev {כְּעֵ֖ת מִנְחַת־עָֽרֶב | kə-ʿēt min-ḥat-ʿā-reḇ} anchors the event to the daily evening offering.
