In the first year of Darius, son of Ahasuerus, of the seed {zera: offspring lineage} of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans {Kasdim: Babylonian ruling class}.
In the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books the number of the years concerning which the word of the LORD {YHWH, Prophecy Giver} came to Jeremiah the prophet: that seventy years must be completed for the desolations of Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: city of peace}.
And I set my face toward the Lord God {Adonai ha’Elohim, Sovereign Judge}, to seek by prayer {tefillah: formal petition} and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
And I prayed to the LORD my God {YHWH Elohai, Prayer Listener} and made confession, and said, "Please, Lord, the great and awesome God, keeper of the covenant and steadfast love {chesed: loyal devotion} to those who love Him and to those who keep His commandments."
We have sinned and acted perversely, we have acted wickedly and rebelled, and have turned aside {sor: deviated path} from your commandments and from your ordinances {mishpat: legal judgments}.
And we did not listen to your servants {avadeikha: commissioned envoys}, the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land {am ha’arets: entire nation}.
To you, O Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Master}, belongs righteousness {tsedaqah: justice and rightness}, but to us belongs the shame of faces as on this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, the near and the distant in all the lands where you have driven them, because of their treachery {ma‘al: faithlessness}.
O LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge}, to us belongs shame {boshet: public dishonor} of face; to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against You.
To the Lord our God {Adonai Eloheinu, Sovereign and Covenant Keeper} belong mercies {rachamim: tender compassion} and forgivenesses, for we have rebelled against Him.
And we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Instructor} to walk in His laws {torotav: instructions}, which He set before us by the hand of His servants the prophets.
And all Israel have transgressed your law and turned aside, refusing to listen to your voice; therefore the curse and the oath {sh’vuah: solemn pledge} that are written in the law of Moses, the servant of God {Elohim: Covenant Guardian}, have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against Him.
And He {YHWH, Covenant Judge} confirmed His words which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us to bring upon us a great calamity {raah: disastrous evil}, which had not been done under all the heavens as was done in Jerusalem.
As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the face of the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Judge} to turn from our iniquities {avonenu: moral failures} and to gain insight by Your truth.
Therefore the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Judge} watched over the calamity and brought it upon us, for the LORD our God {YHWH Eloheinu, Covenant Enforcer} is righteous in all His works which He has done; yet we did not listen to His voice.
And now, Lord our God {Adonai Eloheinu, Redeemer}, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand {yad chazakah: powerful intervention}, and made for yourself a name, as it is this day; we have sinned, we have acted wickedly.
Lord {Adonai, Supreme Judge}, according to all Your righteousnesses {tsidqotekha: acts of justice}, please let Your anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city, Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become a reproach {lecherpah: public disgrace} to all our surroundings.
And now, O our God {Eloheinu: Prayer Hearer}, listen to the prayer of Your servant and to his supplications {tachanunav: earnest pleas}, and cause Your face to shine upon Your sanctuary, which is desolate, for Your own sake, O Lord {Adonai: Supreme Master}.
Incline your ear, my God {Elohai, Prayer Hearer}, and hear; open your eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by your name {name: shimkha, reputation} because we do not present our supplications before You on account of our righteousness, but because of Your great mercies.
O Lord {Adonai, Sovereign Master}, hear; O Lord, forgive {selachah: remove guilt}; O Lord, give heed and act; do not delay, for Your own sake, my God {Elohai, Covenant Redeemer}, because Your name {shimkha: revealed character} is called upon Your city and upon Your people.
And while I was still speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God {YHWH Elohai, Covenant Mercy-Giver} for the holy mountain {har kodesh: sacred site} of my God.
And while I was still speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel {gavriel: Mighty Envoy}, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, flying swiftly, touched me at the time of the evening offering {minchat-erev: Grain Sacrifice}.
He made me understand, spoke with me, and said, "Daniel, I have now come to give you insight {haskil: skill to discern} and understanding {binah: discernment}."
At the beginning of your supplications, a word went out, and I have come to declare it, for you are greatly beloved {hamudot: deeply precious}; so understand the message and gain insight into the vision {mar'eh: revealed appearance}.
Seventy weeks {shavuim: prophetic periods} are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish the transgression, seal up sins, atone for iniquity, bring in everlasting righteousness, seal up vision and prophecy, and anoint the holy of holies {kodesh kodashim: most sacred place}.
And you must know and understand that from the issuing of the word {davar: decree} to restore and to build Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the prince, there shall be seven weeks, and for sixty-two weeks it shall be restored and built with street and trench, even in troubled times {etsok: oppression}.
And after the sixty-two weeks, the anointed one {mashiach: consecrated leader} will be cut off, and there will be nothing for him. Then the city and the sanctuary will be destroyed by the people of a prince who is to come. Its end shall be like a flood, and until the end of the war desolations are determined {shomemot: utter ruin}.
And he will make a covenant {berit: binding treaty} strong with the many for one week, and for half of the week he will cause the sacrifices and offerings to cease. And over the wing of abominations {shikutsim: detestable idols} will come the desolator, and until the consummation what has been decreed will be poured out upon the desolator.
