1 And Abraham {Avraham: covenant patriarch} took another wife {ishah: marital partner}, and her name was Keturah.
2 And she bore {yalad: gave birth} to him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian {Midyan: forefather of Midianites}, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 And Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan; and the sons of Dedan were the Ashurites {ashurim: regional clan}, the Letushites, and the Leummites {leummim: related peoples}.
4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida, and Eldaah; all these were the descendants {bnei: direct lineage} of Keturah {Ketura: Abraham’s later wife}.
5 And Abraham gave {natan: legal bestowal} all {kol: entire property} that he had to Isaac.
6 But to the sons of the concubines whom Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts {matanot: personal presents}. Then he sent them away from his son Isaac {Yitschak: laughter, covenant heir} while he was still living, eastward to the land of the east.
7 And these were the days of the years of the life of Abraham {Avraham: father of a multitude} that he lived: one hundred seventy-five years {shanah: completed cycles}.
8 And Abraham {Avraham: covenant patriarch} breathed his last and died in a good old age {seivah: advanced years}, an old man and satisfied; and he was gathered to his people.
9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah {makhpelah: double-cave site}, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite {hitti: Hethite descendant}, which faces Mamre.
10 The field {sadeh: purchased burial property} that Abraham bought from the sons of Heth {benei Chet: Hittite family lineage}, there Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife.
11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God {Elohim, Covenant Fulfiller} blessed Isaac his son, and Isaac dwelt by the well {beer: named encounter site} of the Living One who sees me.
12 And these are the generations {toledot: family histories} of Ishmael, the son of Abraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant {shifcha: female bondservant}, bore to Abraham.
13 And these are the names {shemot: individual identifiers} of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn {bekhor: eldest ranked heir} of Ishmael, Nebaioth, and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam.
14 And Mishma, and Dumah {dumah: quiet silence}, and Massa {masa: lifted burden}.
15 Hadad {chadad: sharpened one}, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah {kedmah: eastern border}.
16 These are the sons {bnei: descended offspring} of Ishmael, and these are their names by their settlements {chatser: settled encampments} and by their camps; twelve princes according to their peoples.
17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years {shanah: Hebrew year measure}. Then he expired {vayigva: breathed his last}, and he died, and he was gathered to his people.
18 And they dwelled from Havilah {chavilah: eastern borderland region} as far as Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go toward Assyria. He settled {nafal: took his place} over against all his brothers.
19 And these are the generations {toledot: family history} of Isaac the son of Abraham. Abraham {Avraham: covenant forefather} fathered Isaac.
20 And it came to pass that Isaac {Yitschak: covenant heir} was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-Aram {Paddan Aram: northern plain region}, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to himself for a wife.
21 And Isaac pleaded with the LORD {YHWH, Prayer Hearer} before his wife, because she was barren {akarah: unable to have children}, and the LORD responded to him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
22 And the children struggled within her, and she said, “If so, why is this happening to me {anokhi: identity in crisis}?” So she went to inquire of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Guide}.
23 And the LORD {YHWH, Prophetic Revealer} said to her, “Within your womb {bevitnekh: hidden beginnings} are two nations, and from you two peoples will come forth and diverge; one people will prove mightier {yeemats: display prevailing strength} than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.”
24 When her days {yameha: appointed time span} for giving birth were fulfilled, behold {vehineh: unexpected development}, there were twins in her womb.
25 And the first {harishon: initial child} came out red, all of him like a hairy garment {adderet: thick outer cloak}, and they called his name Esau.
26 And after that, his brother came out, and his hand was grasping the heel of Esau. So he called his name Jacob {Yaakov: heel-grabber follower}. And Isaac {Yitschaq: laughter child} was sixty years old at their birth.
27 And the boys grew up, and Esau became a man skillful in hunting {yodea: possessing specialized knowledge}, a man of the field; but Jacob was a complete man {tam: upright or simple-hearted}, dwelling among tents.
28 And Isaac {Yitschaq: chosen family heir} loved Esau because there was game {tsayid: hunted food} in his mouth, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29 And Jacob was cooking stew {nazid: simple hearty meal}, and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary {ayeif: utterly exhausted}.
30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me gulp down some of this red, red stuff {haadom: vivid red stew}, for I am weary. Therefore his name was called Edom {Edom: red name}.”
31 And Jacob {Yaakov: Strategic Negotiator} said, “Sell me your birthright {bekhorah: firstborn privilege} on this day.”
32 And Esau said, “Behold {hinneh: see for yourself}, I am going to die, so why is this birthright {bekhorah: firstborn privilege} to me?”
33 Then Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me this very day {kayom: right now}.” So he swore to him, and he sold his birthright {bechorato: firstborn inheritance} to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau {esav: Jacob's brother} bread and stew of lentils; he ate and drank, then he rose and departed. In this way Esau despised the birthright {bekhorah: firstborn privilege}.
