1 Who is this arriving from Edom, from Bozrah with garments stained red? This majestic one in his attire, advancing in great strength? “I {Righteous Judge: One Who Upholds Justice}, speaking in righteousness {btzedakah: just judgment}, mighty to save.”
2 Why is your clothing {levush: formal outer garment} red, and your garments like those of one who treads in the winepress {gat: grape-crushing press}?
3 I {YHWH, Sovereign Judge} trod the winepress alone; from the peoples none was with me. I trod them in my anger and trampled them in my fury; and their juice {nitzcham: blood} spattered on my garments, and all my clothing I have stained.
4 For the day of vengeance is in My {YHWH, Judge of Justice} heart, and the year of My redeemed {geulai: those I have ransomed} has come
5 I {YHWH, Avenger of Righteousness} looked, but there was no helper; I was astonished that there was none to uphold; so my own arm {zero'a: emblem of personal power} brought salvation to me, and my wrath—it supported me.
6 And I {Yahweh, Divine Judge} trampled the peoples in my anger, and I made them drunk in my wrath, and I poured out their lifeblood {nitsacham: life-blood} on the earth.
7 I will recount the lovingkindnesses of the LORD {YHWH, Faithful Redeemer} and the praises of the LORD, in keeping with everything the LORD has granted us—the abundant goodness shown to the house of Israel, which He has shown them according to His mercies {rachamim: deep compassion} and according to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.
8 And He {YHWH, Faithful Redeemer} said, “Surely they are My people, children who will not act deceitfully {yeshaqqeru: practice falsehood}.” Then He became their Savior.
9 In all their affliction, He {YHWH, Compassionate Deliverer} was afflicted with them, and the messenger of His presence saved them; in His love {ahavah: unfailing devotion} and in His compassion, He redeemed them, and He lifted them and carried them all the days of old.
10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit {ruach kodsho: Sanctifying Presence}; therefore He turned Himself to be their enemy and He fought against them {nilcham-bam: entered into battle}.
11 Then He {YHWH, Remembrance Initiator} remembered the days of old, Moses and His people: Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is the one who put in their midst His holy Spirit {ruach kodsho: consecrating Spirit}?
12 The one who made the arm {zeroa: visible power} of His {YHWH, Sovereign Defender} glory go at the right hand of Moses, dividing the waters before them, to make for Himself an everlasting name.
13 He {YHWH, Guide Supreme} who led them in the depths {tehomot: chaotic waters}, like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble.
14 Like a beast going down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD {YHWH, Rest-Giver} gave them rest; so You led Your people to make for Yourself a glorious name {shem: reputation of honor}.
15 Look down from heaven {shamayim: celestial realm} and see from the habitation of your holiness and your glory; where is your zeal {qinah: devoted passion} and your mighty deeds? The multitude of your inward parts and your mercies toward me—are they restrained?
16 For You are our Father {avinu: covenant head}; though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not recognize us, You, LORD {YHWH, Eternal Redeemer}, are our Father and our Redeemer; from of old Your name is.
17 Why have You caused us to stray, O LORD {YHWH, Sovereign Guide}, from Your ways {midrakh: paths of conduct}? You have hardened our heart so that we do not fear You. Return for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your inheritance.
18 For a short time your holy people {qodshekha: set-apart ones} possessed it, and our adversaries have trampled your sanctuary {mikdashekha: sacred dwelling}.
19 And we have become like those whom You {YHWH, Sovereign Ruler} never ruled from ancient times; they were not called by Your name {shimkha: representative authority}.
