John 14:12ExegesisTAB

John 14 : 12 Faith | Works | Empowerment
12. Linguistic Exegesis
The doubled amen {ἀμὴν | amḗn} ‘truly’ front-loads certainty before any promise is stated. lego hymin {λέγω ὑμῖν | légō hymîn} ‘I say to you’ marks direct address and frames the statement as authoritative speech. The articular participle ho pisteuon {ὁ πιστεύων | ho pisteúōn} ‘the one believing’ functions substantivally, widening the promise to any ongoing believer rather than a single named hearer. The prepositional phrase eis eme {εἰς ἐμὲ | eis emé} ‘into Me’ expresses trust directed toward Jesus as the object of faith. Ta erga ha ego poio {τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ | ta érga ha egṓ poiō} ‘the works which I do’ is joined by a relative clause that identifies the same deeds Jesus is already performing. Kakeinos poiesei {κἀκεῖνος ποιήσει | kakeînos poiḗsei} ‘and that one will do’ picks up the believing person as the future subject, while meizona touton {μείζονα τούτων | meízona toútōn} ‘greater than these’ sets up a comparison of degree, indicating broader reach rather than a different kind of action. The causal clause hoti ego pros ton patera poreuomai {ὅτι ἐγὼ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα πορεύομαι | hóti egṓ pros ton patéra poreúomai} ‘because I am going toward the Father’ grounds the promise in Jesus’ departure, with the present tense of poreuomai portraying that movement as already underway and still unfolding.
