John 14:30ExegesisTAB

John 14 : 30 Authority | Conflict | Innocence
30. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse is built in three tightly linked movements. The opening clause ouketi polla laleso meth’ hymon {οὐκέτι πολλὰ λαλήσω μεθʼ ὑμῶν | ou-ké-ti pol-lá la-lē-sō meth’ hy-môn} places the future verb first and then surrounds it with the limiting adverb and the object phrase, so the emphasis falls on the end of Jesus’ extended speech. The prepositional phrase meth’ hymon ‘with you’ marks relational closeness even as it is being brought to an end. The explanatory clause erchetai gar ho tou kosmou archon {ἔρχεται γὰρ ὁ τοῦ κόσμου ἄρχων | ér-khe-tai gar ho toû kós-mou ár-khōn} uses gar to supply the reason for the curtailed speech, while the articular genitive chain ho tou kosmou archon frames “ruler of the world” as a fixed title. The final clause kai en emoi ouk echei ouden {καὶ ἐν ἐμοὶ οὐκ ἔχει οὐδέν | kaí en e-moi ouk é-khei ou-dén} closes the verse with emphasis on the speaker Himself: the fronted prepositional phrase en emoi ‘in Me’ highlights the sphere in which the ruler finds nothing, and the paired negation ouk ... ouden intensifies the denial into a statement of complete absence of any leverage, foothold, or claim. English can preserve the Greek sequence either by keeping the simple coordination of kai or by slightly smoothing it to a contrastive sense, but the Greek itself presents a forceful progression from curtailed speech to imminent opposition to total defeat of the adversary’s claim.
