John 14:29ExegesisTAB

John 14 : 29 Foreknowledge | Trust | Fulfillment
29. Linguistic Exegesis
The opening `kai nyn {καὶ νῦν | kaí nŷn} ‘and now’` links this saying to the surrounding discourse while marking a present moment of clarification. `Eireka {εἴρηκα | eírēka} ‘I have spoken’` is a perfect form, so the speaking is completed yet still actively relevant; the force of the statement remains in effect for the hearers. `Prin genesthai {πρὶν γενέσθαι | prìn genésthai} ‘before it comes about’` sets the announcement in advance of the event, using `prin` with an infinitive to build a clear temporal frame. The clause introduced by `hina {ἵνα | hína} ‘so that’` gives the purpose of the disclosure, and `hotan genetai {ὅταν γένηται | hótan génētai} ‘when it happens’` narrows that purpose to the moment of fulfillment. The final verb `pisteusete {πιστεύσητε | pisteúsēte} ‘you may believe’` is the intended response; the subjunctive preserves purpose and expectation rather than mere possibility. The sentence therefore moves in a deliberate chain from present speech, to future fulfillment, to the disciples’ faith, with the predictive announcement itself serving as the ground for later belief.
