John 16:32ExegesisTAB

John 16 : 32 Abandonment | Presence | Fulfillment
32. Linguistic Exegesis
The discourse opens with ἰδοὺ {idoú | i-doú} ‘look’, an attention marker that signals a sharp turn in Jesus’ speech. The paired verbs ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ ἐλήλυθεν {ér-khetai hōra kai e-lḗ-lu-then} create a deliberate temporal contrast: the hour is both approaching and, in a real sense, already present. This dual aspect gives the saying immediacy and certainty. The ἵνα-clause {hina | hi-na} frames the disciples’ scattering as the expected outcome of the coming crisis; the clause can be heard as purpose or result, but the context makes it function predictively. The phrase ἕκαστος εἰς τὰ ἴδια {hé-kastos eis tà í-di-a} distributes the action individually, emphasizing that each disciple will retreat into his own sphere. The combination κἀμὲ μόνον ἀφῆτε {ka-mé mó-non a-phē-te} narrows the scene to Jesus Himself, with μόνον intensifying the loneliness. The closing clause οὐκ εἰμὶ μόνος ὅτι ὁ πατὴρ μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἐστιν {ouk ei-mí mó-nos hó-ti ho pa-tḗr met’ e-moû é-stin} reverses the apparent abandonment: the negated state of isolation is explained by the ὅτι-clause {hó-ti | ho-ti}, which grounds Jesus’ confidence in the Father’s ongoing presence. The prepositional phrase μετʼ ἐμοῦ {met’ e-moû | met e-moû} marks close companionship, not distant association. The repeated μόνο- word family (μόνον, μόνος) heightens the contrast between human desertion and divine nearness.
