Leviticus 20 : 22 Obedience | Covenant | Dwelling
22. Linguistic Exegesis
Hebrew uses vav-consecutive in ushmartem {וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֤ם | ū-šəmár-tēm} ‘and you shall keep’ and va-asitem {וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם | wa-ʿăśīṯēm} ‘and you shall do’ to sequence the obligations. The direct object marker et-kol-chukotai {אֶת־כָּל־חֻקֹּתַי֙ | ʾet-kol-ḥuqqôtāy} and ve-et-kol-mishpatai {וְאֶת־כָּל־מִשְׁפָּטַ֔י | wə-ʾet-kol-mīšpāṭāy} flag “all my statutes” and “all my judgments” as the items to be observed. The warning clause, introduced by ve-lo-taki {וְלֹא־תָקִ֤יא | wə-lōʾ-ṯā-qîʾ} ‘and shall not vomit’, personifies the land in a causative construction to underscore the severity of disobedience. The defining relative clause with asher {אֲשֶׁר | ʾăšer} ‘which’ and the participle mevii {מֵבִ֥יא | mēvîʾ} ‘bringing’ tightly binds divine agency to the land into which the people are brought, all rendered in English by a purpose clause introduced with “so that” to preserve the causal linkage.
