24. Linguistic Exegesis
The verse opens with vehayah {וְהָיָה | wə-hā-yāh} ‘and it shall be’ introducing a legal clause, followed by the conditional particle im {אִם | ʾim} ‘if’. The genitive expression me’einei ha’edah {מֵעֵינֵי הָעֵדָה | mē-ʿênê hā-ʿê-dāh} ‘from the eyes of the congregation’ marks lack of awareness. The Niphal perfect ne’esetah {נֶעֶשְׂתָה | ne-ʾe-sə-thā} ‘has been done’ frames the act as accidental. The coordinated clause ve’asu kol-ha’edah {וְעָשׂוּ כָל־הָעֵדָה | wə-ʿā-sū kol-hā-ʿê-dāh} expresses corporate obligation. The sequence of offerings is structured by prepositional phrases: le’olah lere’ach nichoach {לְעֹלָה לְרֵיחַ נִיחֹחַ | le-ʿô-lāh le-rê-yaḥ ni-ḥō-aḥ} ‘for a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma’, la-Yahweh {לַיהוָה | la-Yahweh} ‘to the LORD’, uminchato venisko {וּמִנְחָת֥וֹ וְנִסְכּ֖וֹ | u-min-ḥā-thô wə-nis-kô} ‘and its grain offering and its drink offering’, kamishpat {כַּמִּשְׁפָּט | ka-miš-pāṭ} ‘according to the ordinance’, and use’ir-izzim echad lechatat {וּשְׂעִיר־עִזִּים אֶחָד לְחַטָּאת | u-sə-ʿîr-ʿiz-zîm ʾe-ḥād le-ḥaṭ-ṭā-ʾat} ‘and one male goat for a sin offering’. The English order preserves Hebrew legal sequencing while clarifying meaning.
