Numbers 15 : 25 Atonement | Forgiveness | Sacrifice
25. Linguistic Exegesis
The opening ve-kipper {וְכִפֶּ֣ר | wə-ḵip̄-pēr} ‘and he will make atonement’ uses the sequential vav conjunction to introduce the priest’s action. The prepositional phrase al-kol-adat benei Yisrael {עַֽל־כָּל־עֲדַ֛ת בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל | ʿal-kol-ʿa-ḏat bə-nê yis-rā-ʾēl} ‘for all the congregation of the sons of Israel’ specifies the scope of atonement. The result clause ve-nis-lach lahem {וְנִסְלַ֣ח לָהֶ֑ם | wə-nis-laḥ lā-hem} ‘and it will be forgiven to them’ highlights divine forgiveness. A causal clause ki-shegagah hi {כִּֽי־שְׁגָגָ֣ה הִ֔וא | kî-še-gā-gāh hîʾ} ‘for it was an unintentional error’ links the nature of the offense to the ritual. The coordinated clause heviu et-korbanam isheh la-Yahweh ve-chatatam lifnei Yahweh {הֵבִ֨יאוּ אֶת־קָרְבָּנָ֜ם אִשֶּׁ֣ה לַֽיהוָ֗ה וְחַטָּאתָ֛ם לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה | he-wîʾū ʾet-qā-rə-bā-nām ʾîš-šêh lă-yəhō-wāh wə-ḥaṭ-ṭā-ʾā-tām li-phnê yə-hō-wāh} ‘they have brought their offering—a fire offering to the LORD and their sin offering before the LORD’ presents parallel sacrificial acts. The closing phrase al-sheggatam {עַל־שִׁגְגָתָֽם | ʿal-šig-gā-tām} ‘upon their error’ makes explicit the purpose of the ritual.
