1 The proverbs {mishlei: wise sayings} of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son is the sorrow {tugat: deep anguish} of his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness {resha: moral evil} do not profit, but righteousness {tsedakah: covenant justice} delivers from death.
3 The LORD {YHWH, Righteous Sustainer} will not let the nefesh {nefesh: life-essence} of the righteous go hungry, but He will repel the craving of the wicked.
4 A lazy hand {remiyyah: slackness, neglect} brings poverty, but the hand of the diligent {charutsim: determined workers} produces wealth.
5 A son who gathers in the summer is prudent {maskil: skilled in action}, but a son who sleeps during the harvest causes disgrace {meviš: public dishonor}.
6 Blessings are upon the head of the righteous {tsaddiq: just}, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence {chamas: unjust force}.
7 The memory of the righteous {tsaddiq: covenant-keeping} is for a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot {yirqav: utterly decay}.
8 The wise in heart will accept commands{mitzvot: authoritative instructions}, but the fool of lips will come to ruin{yillavet: be led astray, stumble}.
9 Whoever walks in integrity {tom: moral wholeness} will walk securely, but whoever perverts his ways will be exposed {yivvada: public exposure}.
10 One who winks with the eye {korets: covert sign} causes distress, and a prating fool {ewil: babbling fool} will fall.
11 The mouth of the righteous {tsaddiq: morally upright} is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence {chamas: injurious wrong}.
12 Hatred stirs up strife{medanim: contentious disputes}, but love covers all transgressions{pesha’im: deliberate offenses}.
13 On the lips of the discerning{navon: one with insight}, wisdom will be found, but a rod is for the back of one lacking sense{khasar-lev: without understanding}.
14 The wise store up {yiṣpənū: carefully accumulate} knowledge, but the mouth of a fool brings ruin {mechittah: sudden collapse} near.
15 The wealth of the rich is a fortified city {kiryat: city as place of protection}, but the poverty {reisham: complete destitution} of the poor is their ruin.
16 The work of the righteous {tsaddiq: just} leads to life, but the gain of the wicked results in sin {chatat: moral failure}.
17 The path to life is for one who keeps discipline {musar: moral instruction}, but one who forsakes correction {tochachat: honest rebuke} goes astray.
18 One who covers {mekhaseh: intentional concealment} hatred has lips of falsehood, and one who brings out slander {dibbah: harmful report} is a fool.
19 When words are many, transgression{pesha: willful offense} does not cease, but one who restrains his lips is discerning{maskil: shows understanding}.
20 The tongue {leshon: speech organ} of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is worth little {kimmāṭ: negligible quantity}.
21 The lips of the righteous {tsaddiq: just} feed many, but fools die for lack of heart {lev: discernment}.
22 The blessing of the LORD {YHWH, Divine Provider} makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow {etzev: hardship or grief} with it.
23 To a fool, doing wickedness {zimmāh: malicious intent} is like laughter {kischoq: empty amusement}, but wisdom is for a man of understanding.
24 The fear of the wicked will come upon him, and the desire of the righteous {tsaddiqim: those pursuing justice} He {YHWH, Generous Giver} will grant.
25 As the storm passes, the wicked are no more, but the righteous {tsaddiq: morally upright} is an everlasting {olam: perpetual duration} foundation.
26 As vinegar to the teeth {lashinnayim: biting pain} and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard {heatzel: lazy person} to those who send him.
27 The fear of the LORD {YHWH, Reverence-Inspirer} will add days {yamim: allotted life span}, but the years of the wicked will be shortened.
28 The expectation of the righteous {tsaddiqim: just} is joy {simchah: deep gladness}, but the hope of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of the LORD {YHWH, Righteous Guide} is a stronghold for the blameless {tom: wholehearted integrity}, but it is destruction for those who do evil.
30 The righteous {tsaddiq: upright one} will never be shaken, but the wicked will not dwell in the land {aretz: covenant land}.
31 The mouth of the righteous {tsaddiq: morally upright} bears the fruit of wisdom, but a tongue of perversity will be cut off {tikkaret: separated decisively}.
32 The lips of the righteous know what finds favor {ratson: acceptable desire}, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perversities {tahpukhot: twisted things}.
