1 And the king and Haman came to drink {lishtot: to drink at the feast} with Queen {hamalkah: royal title} Esther.
2 And the king said to Esther again on the second day at the banquet {mishteh: ceremonial feast} of wine, “What is your request, Queen Esther? It will be given to you. And what is your petition {bakashatekh: formal request}? Up to half the kingdom, and it shall be done.”
3 And Esther the queen answered and said, “If I have found favor {khen: unmerited grace} in your eyes, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life {nefesh: soul whole being} be given me in my petition and my people in my request.”
4 For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. And if we had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I would have remained silent, for the adversary {tsar: oppressor} is not worthy of the king’s damage {nezek: loss of value}.
5 And King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, who has filled {mela’o: dared, lit. “filled”} his heart {libbo: intense zeal} to do so?”
6 And Esther said, “A man, an adversary {tsar: opposing party} and enemy—this evil Haman!” Then Haman was terrified {nibat: overwhelmed with dread} before the king and the queen.
7 And the king rose in his wrath {chamato: sovereign anger} from the wine banquet to the garden of the palace, and Haman stood to beg for his life {nefesh: vital soul} from Queen Esther, for he saw that evil had been determined against him by the king.
8 And the king returned from the palace garden {ginnat: royal orchard} to the house of the wine banquet, and Haman was falling upon the couch where Esther lay. The king said, “Would he even subdue {likbosh: coercive mastery} the queen with me in the house?” As the word went out from the mouth of the king, they covered Haman’s face.
9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs, said before the king, “Behold also the tree {etz: execution stake} which Haman built for Mordecai {mordekhai: royal advocate}, who spoke well for the king, stands in Haman’s house fifty cubits high.” And the king said, “Hang him on it!”
10 And they hanged Haman on the tree which he had prepared {hekin: designated} for Mordecai. And the wrath of the king subsided {shakakhah: abated completely}.
