Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength {uzeikh: divinely given power}, Zion! Put on garments {bigdei: symbolic of restored righteousness} of your glory, Jerusalem, the holy city; for never again will the uncircumcised and the unclean enter you.
Shake yourself free from the dust; arise, sit, Jerusalem {Yerushalayim: City of Peace}; loosen yourself from the bonds of your neck, captive daughter of Zion {bat-tsiyon: Honored Remnant}.
For thus says the LORD {YHWH, Delivering Redeemer}: You were sold for nothing {hinnam: without cost}, and you will be redeemed with no money paid.
For thus says the Lord GOD {Adonai YHWH, Sovereign Redeemer}: My people went down to Egypt at first to sojourn {lagur: temporary dwelling} there, and Assyria oppressed them without cause.
And now, what have I here? declares the LORD {YHWH, Compassionate Judge}. My people have been taken away for nothing; their rulers make them wail, declares the LORD. And continually, all day long, My name is blasphemed {minno'atz: contempt}.
Therefore My people shall know My name; therefore, on that day, I {YHWH, Divine Speaker} am the one speaking {medabber: active proclamation}; behold, it is I.
How lovely, upon the mountains, are the feet of a bringer of good news, making peace {shalom: complete well-being} heard, bringing good news of good, making salvation heard, saying to Zion, “Your God {Elohayikh, Sovereign King} reigns!”
The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for eye to eye they will see when the LORD {YHWH, Restorer of Zion} returns to Zion {tsiyon: sacred city}.
Break forth, sing for joy together, O ruins of Jerusalem; for the LORD {YHWH, Restorer of Zion} has comforted His people {ammo: covenant community}, and He has redeemed Jerusalem.
The LORD {YHWH, Divine Deliverer} has uncovered His holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God {Eloheinu, Redeeming Shield}.
Depart, depart; go out from there! Do not touch any unclean {tame: ceremonially defiled} thing. Go out from her midst; purify yourselves, you who bear the vessels of the LORD {YHWH, the One who calls for holiness}.
For you will not go out in haste, nor will you leave as fugitives, for the LORD {YHWH, Guiding Protector} will go before you, and the God of Israel {Elohei Yisra’el, National Redeemer} will gather you in as your rear guard.
Behold, my servant {avdi: devoted envoy} will act wisely; he will be exalted {yarum: lifted above}, and he will be lifted up and become very high.
Just as many were appalled{shammu: struck with horror} at you, so his appearance was disfigured{mishkhat: physical distortion} beyond that of any man, and his form more than the sons of humankind.
Thus he will sprinkle {yazzeh: symbolic cleansing} many nations; kings will shut their mouths before him, for what was not told to them they have seen, and what they had not heard they have understood {hitbonanu: perceived with insight}.
